Riaa Hacked

Aug 30, 2002 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | Add comment
It serves them right. The RIAA has been threatening the average music downloader with prosecution for the past few years now. People are really getting frustrated at big brother's attempt to force us into a situation where the consumer has no option but to buy a product before we've even heard it or seen it.

That's why I download music. If the album is crap - I don't buy it. If it's good - I buy it. Simple.

They got hacked this past week. Here's a screenshot of one of the pages that the hacker threw up on the RIAA site (which is still down as of this writing). Ha ha!

No More Number 1

Aug 27, 2002 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | 2 Comments
No this article isn't about peeing. It's about the bus I take from Waterfront Station in Vancouver every morning.

They have decided to cancel service from Waterfront Station to Burrard Station and force people to take the Skytrain (they just speant a ton updating it) and save them money. It is however going to add about 10 minutes to my commute waiting for a train and then another bus. Dumb idea Translink (as per usual)!

Lots of people are really put out by the changes in transit recently. Frankly, since the bus strike last year I haven't felt too good about giving them any of my money. They have a monopoly though and we have to do what we have to do. Bastards!

On a side note, I got my camera back. It's easier to make the ol' blog more personal with my own pictures. I missed my camera. =(

1st Person Shooter Documentary

Aug 27, 2002 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | 4 Comments
On CTV (be sure to watch the preview) this weekend is a documentary on first person shooters. This is not a positive look at the gaming community as far as I can tell. I understand, to a point, but come on. It's not crack for God's sake.

I have spent tons of money buying and oodles of time playing 1st person shooters. My favourite of which has been Half-life. At one point I played so much my wife thought I was going to be assimilated into the computer. I was unemployed and needed relief from reality so I escaped into that world. Here are my stats for that time. I was even number one in OZ Deathmatch one week. I still play shooters, but a wider variety now, and not as much. I've even branched into RPG's like Dungeon Siege which I finished last night. Personally, I don't think 1st person shooters have affected me too much. What do you think?

On the upside I have made a ton of friends through online gaming. I still keep in touch with many that I met in cyberspace years ago now and, although I've never met them face to face, they are still friends.

Thanks for the link Chuff! Frag away!

Murder in Oregon

Aug 26, 2002 by Mike Browne in Downers | 3 Comments
The FBI is searching the former home of Wade Weaver in Oregon City. Weaver has been in the public eye for some time during the investigation and even told the press that he was probably the prime suspect.

The coverage of these horrible events has been intensive, especially in Oregon.

Investigators have discovered two sets of remains at the home. One of which, at this writing, has been identified as that of Miranda Gaddis (see picture below):

Strangely enough a newspaper reported that the father of suspect Ward Weaver is on Death Row in California for two murders, including that of a 23-year-old woman whom he kidnapped, raped and killed before burying her body in the yard of his home.

Thankfully, Ward Weaver is already being held on an unrelated rape charge.

Final Accounting

I stole this from NYTimes.com (you have to register for free to read the articles there).

City Compiles List of Dead and Missing From Sept. 11

By THOMAS J. LUECK

The New York City medical examiner released a list yesterday of 2,819 people it said were killed or missing in the Sept. 11 attack on the World Trade Center.

The list, the most complete official accounting to date of the victims of the attack, was prepared in advance of the Sept. 11 anniversary observance at ground zero, which is being planned by City Hall. At that event, the names of victims are to be read by former Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani, other dignitaries and victims' family members.

The release of the list before the observance had been requested by several news organizations, including The New York Times. Ellen Borakove, a spokeswoman for the medical examiner, said the list was not intended to be a final accounting of victims, but was not likely to revised before the anniversary. The names released yesterday could not be verified independently after they were provided to news organizations beginning about 3 p.m.

The medical examiner's list was shorter by four names than one being used by the Police Department. Ms. Borakove said the four names were deleted because they included a woman listed twice, by both her married and maiden names, and three others who were reported missing shortly after Sept. 11 by people who have not been in further contact with the city.

The medical examiner's accounting included a breakdown by age, finding that the largest number of victims ranged from 30 to 42.

It said the largest number of people of the same age were those who were 37 years old, of which there were 121 victims. There were six victims 4 years old or younger, and four victims 80 years old or older, the report said. The children were believed to have been passengers aboard the planes that crashed into the trade center.

Moon Cakes

Aug 20, 2002 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | 1 Comment
My friend and co-worker, Kevin Chan, has been working on a project with a company in China that makes Moon Cakes. I've never had a moon cake but Kevin Assures me that they are good. Moon Cakes are made especially for a Chinese Mid-autumn Festival. Kevin is designing the whole ad campaign for Maxim's Cake Shop (they actually have 10 stores in the small City of Macau).

Here's what he did (in his own words):

In case you're wondering, I did 2 metal boxes design for the moon cake. Also design the plastic wrapping for the plastic knife inside the box. The wrapping for the moon cake inside the box. I also did 2 big posters for the bus stop. similar design for small flags for hanging the the stores, and similar 2 for instore use. A long vertical banner to hang in the store...
Also, design the 4 draw coupons, gift certificate, envelope for gift certificate, new product intro card, plastic bags for carrying the moon cake, 2 sided Boucher 5-6 newspaper ads. And there will be a 6 x7 meter big poster!

Below is a picture of Kevin's work, a poster on a sign, in Macau.

You can click here to see an even larger version of the sign. The box that the poster is on is lit up at night. Very cool. Nice work Kevin Chan!

Fabry's Disease

Aug 14, 2002 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | 1 Comment
I was reading the online edition to the Bridgewater Bulletin, the newspaper from NS that I'm subscribed to, and found an interesting article. An old friend of mine, Richard Corkum, suffers from a rare disease (only 4000 cases worldwide) called Fabry's Disease. He has become quite active in clinical studies and drug trials through a company in the US. He also built a website, fabrysociety.org. As the disease is genetic, other members of his family also suffer the disease to varying degrees.

From his site:

"What are the symptoms of Fabry's disease?

Boys with Fabry disease usually have discomfort of the hands and feet with abnormal sensation (paresthesia) or burning pain by adolescence. Red raised lesions known as angiokeratomas occur on the skin and within the mouth. The ability to sweat is decreased. The cornea and lens of the eye become clouded. There may be painful abdominal crises. Renal impairment may require dialysis or kidney transplant. The kidney failure may cause hypertension. Heart function can be impaired.

Females with partial enzyme activity may not show any symptoms or only late in life. Impaired heart function may be their primary problem.
"

Richard and his nephew, Jamie Hirtle, also suffering from Fabry's, have been traveling to the US to participate in research. The drug companies and the American government have been footing the bill for them to take part. However, the Nova Scotian and Canadian governments do not cover treatment of this sort as it is rare and still experimental. Of late the two have been receiving bi-weekly transufusions of enzymes that have helped to reduce the symptoms of the disease.

Hopefully, once the trials are over, either the Canadian and Nova Scotian governments, or the drug companies themselves, will pony up the dough to keep Richard and Jamie going with treatment.

Good luck Richard. Activism for such a positive cause gives you nothing but good karma.

Wow! It's pretty neat to be involved in such a new medium. We get to see laws developed to handle something that was so small 10 years ago that it didn't require laws. Hopefully the good guys (the little guys like us) will win. I don't think Davezilla is going to hurt Godzilla's rep. There's a string of terrible films that have already taken care of that.

Ike

Aug 11, 2002 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | Add comment
Our next door neighbour, as some of you know, is an idiot, a screamer and a classic abuser. She berates someone and then becomes sickeningly sweet once she realizes that there may be consequences. She never quite takes responsibility. Carol and I have started calling her Ike. She reminds us of Ike Turner in his relationship with his wife Tina (see below):

We saw the Turner's life together depicted in "What's Love Got to Do with It", where Ike was played by Laurence Fishburne (who was also Cowboy Curtis on Peewee's Playhouse), and hilariously (yet sadly) played by Tim Meadows on Saturday Night Live.

It goes like this: Smack! "Oh Baby, Ike's sorry. He won't do it again" Smack! "Oh Baby, you shouldn't upset Ike like that. Accidents happen. It won't happen again." Smack! etc etc...

This is Getting Retarded

Aug 11, 2002 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | Add comment
In Yahoo News today they are reporting that US Attorney General Ashcroft go after Internet users who swap songs. They're talking jail time and everything. LOL. Sort of sounds a little Nazi-esque if you ask me.

I remember trading CD's and taping them in the 80's. In the 70's my friends and I traded LP's and taped them. We did this a lot. I guess retroactively we should all be thrown in the slammer.

Come take me a away because in 1976 I taped my buddy's Boston album. Oh no!

Here's a note to the RIAA: First of all, you suck. Now that I have that out of the way I can really rant. Perhaps record sales are down because CD prices are too high. It's a bad investment for consumers to buy a CD without hearing the whole thing first. Bands like Metallica are losing money because their stuff sucks lately. The market is saturated with so much crappy music that people are just not spending. Also, I'm in Canada. Why the hell do you have jurisdiction over me?

I bought (yes, bought) The Eminem Show. Why? Because I downloaded the whole thing and liked it. I do that with every CD I buy now. Some suck so I don't buy them, others, like Eminem's I buy ... because they're good. Do you still want to throw me in jail even though I by (some) CD's afterward. There would be a lot less people free to buy CD's at all. Bring back Napster! End of rant... Myahhhhh!

Aug 09, 2002 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | 1 Comment
I'm listening to Weezer right now. The blue Album; their debut (see below):

One of the coolest songs on this great CD is Buddy Holly. The video featured scenes from Happy Days!

Carol and I saw them a few years ago. They were great but I think the lead singer was drunk. We could have seen them at the Whiskey-A-GoGo in LA when we were there, but were too late to get tickets. The line was huge.

Airline Meals

Aug 08, 2002 by Mike Browne in Lunch | 1 Comment
If you're sick of my lunch you may want to see what people flying on various airlines are having for meals. A great use of this site would be to check out what tragic culinary disaster you're going to be subjected to if you take XYZ Air.

Thanks to my old work pal, Duncan O, for the link.

Not Feeling Well

Aug 07, 2002 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | 7 Comments
I stayed home from work today. I feel like I've been driven over by a hummer with studded snow tires on.

I have a headache, sore throat and I'm congested. I don't think I ate something bad. Those symptoms are more cold or flu like. Maybe I caught the Norwalk Virus from one of the folks who were on the Holland America cruise ship that got sick last week. It's been all over the news here.

Looks like Spirit Air has a great idea: Spirit Air to Offer Free Seats Sept. 11
They're going to be busy that day.

No Wonder They're Trigger Happy

They're high and not just because they're in a plane. Perhaps this article:
Navy Publication on Giving Speed to Military Pilots
might help to explain what happened to the Canadian Soldiers killed on the ground in Afghanistan in that "Friendly Fire" incident.

THE BIG MYTH

Aug 06, 2002 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | Add comment
I saw this article on memepool this morning and began to ponder.

It seems that every culture on Earth has it's own idea of where we come from. Darwin says evolution is the answer (time for me to read my copy of The Origin of the Species). People who take the Bible literally believe in creationism. Me I believe what I've heard about evolution, but in no way do I believe that excludes God. Pretty heavy topic, but worth the brain power.

S I G N S

Aug 06, 2002 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | 1 Comment
Carol, her mom and I went to see S I G N S on the weekend. I loved this movie. It was well worth paying the full Friday night price at the Silver City Coquitlam - Famous Players theatre.

The movie stars Rory Culkin, Joaquin Phoenix and Abigail Breslin all pictured above and Mel Gibson (below) as a farming family that discovers crop circles in their Pennsylvania cornfields and the strange events that follow:

M. Night Shyamalan has done it again. I'm a huge movie fan and this guy never falis to impress me. I can see how some people may not appreciate his work, as you have to LOVE movies to get some of it. Someone who goes to see a film to zone out rather than to have an experience may not enjoy it at all. Since The Sixth Sense I have looked forward to and been impressed by each of this man's offerings. I can't wait to see what's next.

It's My Brithday

Aug 05, 2002 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | 1 Comment
I'm 33 today. I feel like this guy:

I never though I would care about getting older, but it's starting to bug me. Who knew? It's not like I'm eighty.

Sharing my birthday with me are astronaut Neil Armstrong, Carol's cousin Matt and actor Chuck Campbell who strangely enough was born on exactly the same day as me in the same town and most likely in the same hospital, Grace Maternity in Halifax, NS. I'm adopted so who knows if our paths crossed in the nursery.

Also, on this day in history (August 5 1962), Marilyn Monroe was found dead in in her Hollywood home. That was exactly seven years before I was born. Maybe I am her reincarnated. Seven Year Itch?

Lots of other things happened on August 5th throughout history. Probably the coolest of which is that the Beatles released their Revolver album in 1966. It was voted best album ever in 2000.

NOTE: To see some of the content for August 5th on some of the above links you may have to enter the date in the form on each website. Durnit all!

Molson Indy Vancouver

Aug 04, 2002 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | 2 Comments
Every year our friend Bill works at the Molson Indy. Now we know why:

Hehe!

It took place last week. I'm watching the re-run of it now on TV. Dario Franchiti, the husband of actress Ashley Judd, won the race this year. She was there cheering as her hubby got the checkered flag.

I worked there in 1999, but haven't been there since. I think it would be fun to go as a spectator sometime. It's pretty expensive, but a good time. I must admit I like watching the crashes. But not as much as some people (yuck).

Driver's Miseducation

Aug 04, 2002 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | Add comment
I took Driver's Education when I was in High School. I learned to drive in a crappy little blue Chevy Chevette. In Robert Pelton Young's book, Come Back Alive, he talks about how it's always the other guy in the Chevette with no breaks hurtling down the hill toward you that's going to kill you, not weather conditions or anything natural.

My friend, Ken Richardson, who I used to drive around (quite insanely fast) with in High School sent me the funniest Driver's Ed SWF I've ever seen. I almost peed my pants! Strangely enough Ken works on a pit crew for a racing team. Zoom!

Poor Kitty

Aug 03, 2002 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | 2 Comments
If anyone has seen the Austin Powers movies you know about Mr Bigglesworth, Dr Evil's cat. Hairless kitties are apparently quite trendy. My dad is a vet and he says that these poor felines are prone to acne. Ew! Cat pimples. Wasn't that a movie in the 80's? No wait, that was Cat People.

Here's Harley:

She's not a hairless cat by any means, but she's is old. She lives with our friends Kate and Tommy (aka Schlemiel). Harley is 16 (I think), blind and deaf. She still gets around though. She's a dignified old lady for sure.

Come Back Wayne!

Aug 02, 2002 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | 1 Comment
According to MSNBC News the Great One may be planning to come back to the NHL as a player.

Pilar says he's "pulling a Michael Jordan". I hope Gretzky's comeback (if it's true) is more successful than Jordan's. Mike has been plagued by injuries and looking look an old fart on the court (he's still better than everyone on the court).

International High IQ Society

Aug 02, 2002 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | 1 Comment
I just took this 5 Minute IQ Test and scored pretty well, 141. I tested at 147 in high school so it looks like all those years of abusing my brain haven't done me too badly. Is 6 points a lot to lose? I guess if you're a carrot or a wrestler.

My score qualified me to be a member of the High IQ Society. I think my IQ would drop 40 or 50 more if I were to actually pay the cash to join.

Hey Saddam, Look Over There....

Aug 01, 2002 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | Add comment
There's lots of jabber around the net and in the news about a possible US attack on Iraq.

This is kind of weird if you ask me. All this talk prior to an attack doesn't make good tactical sense. Hello, the element of surprise is kind of a good thing if you want to win (see D-DAY). At least there's been a spin put on things in the way of disinformation. Perhaps it's the CIA, or maybe even the Masons.

Ain't global security grand?

The Internet has added a whole new aspect to warfare. You can look at the Al-Qaeda's Traning Manual on the American Department of Justice site. Hmmm... Are you helping or hindering terrorists?
