I was really sick over the weekend. I still feel as though I'd eaten something from here:

It's a smelly dumpster in an alley that I walk by every day on my way to work. Yuck.

I was barfing my head off yesterday and, frankly, I'm still afraid to eat anything. I'm a little woozy. I bet if I were to watch any of the Top Ten Movie Barf Scenes I'd be back at it again. *Urp*

The flu sucks. For my various symptoms I have Imodium (you don't want to know), and Tylenol (headache) to get me through my work day. But I don't have any Gravol which is probably what I need the most.

Finally, the company that manages the building I work in is remodelling the bathrooms on this floor. So I have to go downstairs either via elevator or stairwell (which may or may not be locked) to be sick. I hope the janitor doesn't mind cleaning up puke.

I know, you're thinking, "Why didn't you stay home?" I have no sick days left. Argh. Anyway, I'm here and a little green around the gills.

All this chasing of immortality that we humans do is insane. We're all going to croak within years of one another no matter what we do. The only way this can be different is freak disease or tragic accident. We spend all this time obsessing on preventing, or delaying by moments, the inevitable when we could be having a good time.

Like the man said, "Life is what happens to you when you're busy making other plans."

I Hate Taking the Bus

Sep 12, 2002 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | 8 Comments
Taking the bus is always an exercise in tolerance for me. Being crammed into a tin box with people who smell of booze from the night before, mothballs, odd foods and adult diapers (yes adult diapers) is enough to set me wretching first thing in the morning. I'm considering taking up smoking again or having a clothespin attatched to my nose so as to spare me from the olfactory assault of the stinky, trasit riding masses.

That is all ... for now.

9/11

Sep 11, 2002 by Mike Browne in Downers | 1 Comment
I've changed the look of my site just for today. You know why.

I'm not going to post funny links or rant and rave about what I like or dislike today. Later on I may post some links to other sites commemorating September 11, 2001 in a special way.

There are many.

So much has happened this year. Many tears have been shed. The world is a different place.

I pray that the victims and their families, everyone in the free world for that matter, heals just a little more today. I hope that we can find new and creative ways to prevent the events from a year ago from ever happening again.

Let's not forget this. Honestly, I don't think I could if I tried.

I don't think we'll ever truly understand it. Who would care to know such depraved reasoning anyway?

I not only remember people, planes and buildings being destroyed. I remember line ups at blood banks. I remember volunteers chomping at the bit to go and assist in any way with the rescue and recovery efforts. I remember police and firemen collecting for the families of the victims. I remember the people opening their homes to stranded airline passengers in their time of need. There has been a lot of love between strangers since the horrible events that day. If there's one thing we've learned since 9/11 it's that even with all it's warts our society still knows how to love.

Chretien's been Prime Minister since Christ was a cowboy and doesn't hear much except what he wants to. People have taken to calling him the Prozac Prime Minister. "Evr'yding is fine ofer dere!!"

I've been reading The Two Towers. It's the second installment of the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

I read the series when I was a lot younger and barely remember anything from it. I thought it would be a good idea to polish up on what happens to those Hobbits and that darned Ring before the movie comes out at Christmas time.

My bet is more Oscar nods for Peter Jackson and his crew. Jackson wrote and directed one of my favourite zombie movies, Dead Alive. I've been a fan for a long time. It's great to see someone like him come from relative obscurity to one of the most respected directors in Hollywood. Way to go Peter! I'd love to work with him one day.

Canada Lags in Defense Spending

Sep 04, 2002 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | Add comment
Canada.com has set up a beautiful site for the September 11 Anniversary. Today they posted an article with the headline "U.S. envoy slams low defense spending". I would tend to agree.

Our armed forces are somewhat of a joke. That's not due to the men and women who serve. They do the best they can and do us proud. However, they don't have a heck of a lot to work with. The government needs to throw more money at defense, especially with the climate of terrorism ever on the rise. The forces have been recruiting like mad this year, but we need better equipment. What our soldiers are using now is marginally acceptable, at best, and mostly out of date. Canada doesn't come close to measuring up to our NATO commitments militarily. We owe it to ourselves and our next door neighbours to firm up the lines of defense.
