Rick and Wendy's House of Horrors

Oct 31, 2002 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | 1 Comment
This is Rick and Wendy's (with Jordan and Hunter the twins) place:

CityTV did the weather from their place two nights ago.

Rick goes all out for Hallowe'en. He claims it all started a few years ago with the skeleton I gave him that's hanging from the noose off the chimney.

We went for a visit last night. I took a lot of pictures of the place all duded up. There was a creepy skeleton in a casket that would lift the lid every few minutes. A spooky ghost flying buy on a remote control (going to fast to get). There were giant pumpkins, many many skeletons, an eerie scarecrow and of course a graveyard with Rick's own grave.

All in all, what a great job. I love hallowe'en it's really neat to see someone put that much into it. Rick is well situated to do so with his own rigging company, Riggit and got some of his props from the Cold Squad set sale. The coolest of all is that they are taking donations for the Burn Unit. If you drop by tonight (300 block East 26th, North Van, take the Lonsdale exit off Number 1 and turn up Lonsdale and take a right onto 26th) pony up some dough for the burn unit.

Green graves give back to nature

Eco-friendly funerals break new ground. Sounds great to me. When I die stick me in a burlap sack and either put me out with the trash or toss me into a hole in the woods. Having been a cemetery worker and security in a hospital morgue I have seen what happens to the human body after death. It ain't pretty. I'll be dead, so who cares? The eco friendly idea is as good as any.

Vancouver police break laws policing poor: report

I've heard horror story after horror story about the VPD and their practices. Until now I've taken things with a couple of grains of salt. Perhaps a few less now. This report makes a lot of interesting allegations against the cops here in our fine city. Especially in relation to the Downtown East Side (Notoriously Canada's poorest Postal Code). I'm Some of these allegations may (and probably are) exaggerated or even untrue due to the nature and disposition (drug addicts and alcoholics) of a lot of the people reporting. However, there are enough of them to warrant at least a third, impartial party's investigation.

If the police have truly been treating people the way it is purported they are, no wonder this has happened. If the cops don't care it's kind of hard to get things done.

My So Called LIfe

Oct 29, 2002 by Mike Browne in Movies and TV | Add comment

This 1994 show was great, but only lasted 19 episodes. The critics loved it and it had quite a little cult following. I guess the ratings just weren't good enough. Now you can snag every episode on DVD packaged in a neat-o (but sort of expensive) metal lunchbox.

We know that Jared Leto went on to a successful career in such flicks as Requiem for a Dream. But, we haven't seen much of Claire Danes. From the look of her entry on IMDB she may be making a comeback. She's going to be in Terminator 3.

Boo!

An exerpt (I've been here):

St. Paul's Anglican Church, 1749 Argyle St., Halifax

While staff insist that St. Paul's is not haunted, the church continues to draw the curious, anxious to get a glimpse of a haunting sight.

On Dec. 6, 1917, when the French ship Mont Blanc exploded in Halifax Harbour, thousands of windows shattered throughout the city, including a pane of glass on the upper floor of St. Paul's. It is said that the broken glass resembles the profile of Charles Inglis, a priest at the church in the 1800s.

"You can see his nose and the back of his head. It looks like he's wearing a funny hat," said Karen Harris, parish administrator.

Some say a man was blasted through the glass during the explosion, and that it's his dark silhouette that appears in the glass. According to Harris, that's just a ghost story…

Accused Sniper Linked to Vancouver

Oct 28, 2002 by Mike Browne in Downers | 1 Comment
The Vancouver Sun is reporting that Muhammad told a Bellingham man he was 'heading to Vancouver'. Apparently he was interested in becoming a Canadian citizen. Sorry, but I think the U.S can keep him.

What is it about the Pacific Northwest's propensity for breeding serial killers? We've had some crazies come from here (Clifford Olson and now Robert Picton) and Washington State (Ted Bundy and the Green River Killer) just below us. Perhaps it's the dreary winter weather - rainy and overcast. There's a high suicide rate here as well. How uplifting.

Some Vancouver Spookiness

As you read you'll see the story of a ghost in Vancouver Hospital. One of the guards I worked with there saw that ghost one night. He came back to the security office a terrible mess. He claimed that the ghost walked right through him in the tunnels near the site of the old Burn Unit. He had to see a counsellor that night, was sedated and sent home. He never came back to work at VGH.
