Invasion of jelly giants

Nov 29, 2002 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | 5 Comments

Monster ... a jellyfish off the coast of Japan

A DIVER takes a look at one of the thousands of monster jellyfish which have invaded a stretch of coastline.

The huge creatures are 3ft wide, 15ft long and weigh up to 320 lbs.

Fishermen’s catches have been halved by the biggest plague of the molophus nomurai for 44 years off Echizen, Japan.

The poison from the species’ tentacles discolours and sickens fish but is not lethal to humans.

Fishermen reported thousands of the giant jellyfish trapped in their nets.

Biologist Toru Yasuda said: “We don’t know what caused this, but it may be warm water temperatures.”

Thanks for the story Bill!

This is a picture of my Dad with one of those miniature horses mentioned in the article I posted the other day. Mom took this picture when she and Dad were in the Okanagan this fall. They had a great time. It was nice to have them around.

Being a retired veterinarian Dad takes every opportunity he can to grope an animal. I had an interesting childhood accompanying my dad on many a "country call" or assisting him at one of his hospitals.

Fez of Ron and Fez fame has Synaesthesia.

Synaesthesia (syn -joined, aesthesia -sense) is a neurological rarity in which two or more senses are connected. For example music might be "seen" in colours and patterns, taste may be seen in shapes, letters may have textures, etc. Click on any of the links below to learn more about this weird, wonderful and very colourful condition!

I hope Fezzy gets better soon. =)

I can't think of a really good reason to need to walk on to the ferry with a gun. Target shooting off the deck of the Queen of Nanaimo? Seagull skeet shooting? Walking to a hunting spot near the ferries doesn't seem to be really viable around BC. Unless you're hunting ducks in Horsehoe Bay or warf rats in Tswassen.

Only $33 to get into the body chop - smh.com.au I feel a little faint. I've been in morgues and seen the results of autopsy firsthand. It's pretty grim. I really don't understand what kind of person would pay money to see that.

I know, it's taboo. We're a society of rubberneckers. We really want to see the gore at the accident on the highway and are disappointed when we get there and it's been cleaned up. But paying to see a formerly live human being sliced and hacked to ribbons (and it's not done gently)? Come on. There's no dignity left in that person's death if the dissection of his or her corpse is turned into a sideshow. How irreverent. Pshaw!

Criteria for optimal web design (designing for usability)

By Michael L Bernard

Designing a website that takes into account the human element requires both an understanding of our nature as well as our physiological limitations. Usable websites incorporate human tendencies and limitation into its overall design. The questions below are meant to address some of the more important human factors concerns in the design and building of usable websites.

In keeping with Rememberance day this Monday past here's a bit about our family history in World War One. The National Archives of Canada have kept great records (of course). This is the information about my grandfather's joining the armed forces and fight in WW1 in 1916. He claimed to be 18 but was only 16. I guess he really wanted to go.

Here's the front and back of his attestation form. Look at the date on the front. What a big fibber. He made it through, working as a medic in the trenches and on the killing fields of Europe. He later became a dentist, married my grandmother, Ruby, and had four children the youngest of which is Dad.

I don't know how you feel about it, but you were female in your last earthly incarnation.
You were born somewhere in the territory of modern Northern England around the year 1200.
Your profession was that of a trainer or holder of fine animals, such as birds.

Your brief psychological profile in your past life:
Person with huge energy, good in planning and supervising. If you were just garbage-man, you were chief garbage-man.

The lesson that your last past life brought to your present incarnation:
You are bound to solve problems of pollution of environment, recycling, misuse of raw materials, elimination of radioactivity by all means including psychological methods.

Remembrance Day

Nov 11, 2002 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | Add comment
November 11 is Remembrance Day for Canadians. It's today that we remember those who fought and died for our country.

Why should we remember?:

We must remember. If we do not, the sacrifice of those one hundred thousand Canadian lives will be meaningless. They died for us, for their homes and families and friends, for a collection of traditions they cherished and a future they believed in; they died for Canada. The meaning of their sacrifice rests with our collective national consciousness; our future is their monument. (Heather Robertson, A Terrible Beauty, The Art of Canada at War. Toronto, Lorimer, 1977.)

Carol and I watched HBO's miniseries Band of Brothers on DVD this weekend. It's the true story of a company of American Paratroopers in WW2. Very well done. It was executive produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Speilberg who also gave life to another great World War 2 drama, Saving Private Ryan. I know neither of these were Canadian, but they do make you think about what people sacrificed so we can live as well as we do.

Police descend on angry, rampaging fans at GM Place after rock band cancels

Nothing like a riot to get the juices flowing here in Vancouver. We have one every few years, usually incited by the loss of the Stanley Cup or an APEC Summit. There was some noise when Creed didn't play a sold out show, and more when Limp Bizkit and Eminem (we had tickets for that show) didn't show.

Now, Axl Rose, still calling himself Guns and Roses even though he's the only original band member, has jammed on Vancouver rock fans who paid a whopping $80 for tickets. GM Place said that the no show was caused by Rose being unable to get out of California due to stormy weather. The promoter said it was "mechanical" problems. Other sources say it was because they only sold 8000 tickets and the big cry baby didn't want to play. Either way it's a bust for music fans.

A woman at Carol's work was working security for the show and she said no one told them that anything was wrong until 9:00 even though the concert was supposed to have started at 7:00pm. They started giving people's money back around 9:30 and the place went wild. According to Carol's co-worker The cops were beating people with batons, using pepper spray, drawing their guns and liberally using their dogs on people. Security ended up having to stay locked upstairs until 3 in the morning because the rioters smashed a ton of windows at GM place.

Axl has done this before, in Paris and Montréal. What a dick.

Another mark against Vancouver fans. We're soooo mature.

The soundtrack was phenomenal, the dancing was energetic, the acting was excellent (Travolta was nominated for an Oscar that year), the dancing was superb and the story was griity and real. All of it added up to a 118 minute snapshot of the disco era at it's height. For a brief time Disco didn't suck.
