And I ate his liver...

Jan 30, 2004 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | Add comment
If you haven't heard by now, recently a German man named Armin Meiwes killed and ate another man whom he met on the Internet. Bernd Juergen Brandes wanted to die and was actually willing to be eaten. Very odd. Odder still was that the courts couldn't find anything to charge this guy with as his victim wasn't a victim at all, but rather a participant. One statement said, "The accused supposedly first cut off the penis of the victim by mutual agreement because they wanted to eat it together."

There's been lots of interest in this very strange case. A Chicago based 'Murder Metal' band called Macabre even wrote a song about it (check put their ode to the Hillside Stranglers right here [1.12mb MP3]). Here are the lyrics to The Wustenfeld Man Eater (Armin Meiwes):

In the German internet classifieds
was an ad for a man's demise
then after death he'd eat his prize
a cannibal in modern times

Then to his ad a man replied
agreed to what was advertised
his penis was cut off while still alive
he ate half his own penis before he died

Officials finally tried and have convicted Meiwes of manslaughter sentencing him to eight and a half years in the slammer.

Woohoo! Check 'em out...

Shake up at the VPD

Jan 28, 2004 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | Add comment
Two officers fired, four demoted for assaults
VPD Chief Jamie Graham apologizes to public.

On the VPD Media Liaison Unit's site there's a timeline of what happened, a video [16.6mb WMV] of Chief Graham's statement (as well as a transcript [PDF]), a written apology [PDF] by the police officers for the incident, and a 100 page document containing the Chief's Disposition [PDF] in regards to the beatings in Stanley Park.

Interesting reading and a good beginning. However, I think a lot more than this needs to take place before people are going to have any faith in the Vancouver City Police again. They've gained quite the rep for being a little over the top physically on many occasions (remember the GNR riot and the other cop related booboos of late?) and there are also hints of corruption deep within the ranks. Let's have a third party take a peek, not another police or government body, at what's what.

The Canucks won again 4 to 1 last night in kind of a laugher against the Nahsville Predators. The Vancouver goalie, Dan Cloutier, was in fine form last night save for the 40 footer scored on him by Tootoo. Cloutier, known for being a hothead (see this fight [4.22 mb MPG] between he and Salo whne he was in Rangers uniform), has been doing much better lately. 15 New Regulations in the BC Registry of Motor Vehicle's 2003

Jan 23, 2004 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | 1 Comment
1. Turn signals will give away your next move. A confident BC driver
avoids using them.

2. Under no circumstance should you maintain a safe distance between
you and the car in front of you, because somebody else will fill in the
space, putting you in an even more dangerous situation.

3. The faster you drive through a red light, the less of a chance
you have of getting hit.

4. Warning! Never come to a complete stop at a stop sign. No one
expects it and it will result in you being rear-ended.

5. Never get in the way of an older car that needs extensive
bodywork, especially with Alberta or Sask, plates. With no insurance, the
other operator has nothing to lose.

6. Braking is to be done as hard and late as possible to ensure that
your ABS kicks in, giving a vigorous, foot massage as the brake pedal
violently pulsates. For those of you without ABS, it's a chance to
strengthen your leg muscles.

7. Never pass on the left when you can pass on the right. It's a
good way to prepare other drivers entering the highway.

8. Speed limits are arbitrary figures; given only as a suggestion
and are not enforceable in BC during rush hour, especially in Vancouver.

9. Just because you're in the left lane and have no room to speed up
or move over doesn't mean that a BC driver flashing his high beams behind
you doesn't think he can go faster in your spot.

10. Always brake and rubberneck when you see an accident or even
someone changing a tire. This is seen as a sign of respect for the victim.

11. Learn to swerve abruptly without signalling. BC is the home of
high-speed slalom driving; thanks to the Department of Public Works, which
puts potholes in key locations to test drivers' reflexes and keep them
alert.

12. It is tradition in BC to honk your horn at cars in front of you
that do not move three milliseconds after the light turns green.

13. To avoid injury in the event of a collision or rollover, it is
important to exit your vehicle thru the windshield right away. Wearing your
seat belt will only impede your hi-velocity escape from danger.

14. Remember that the goal of every BC driver is to get ahead of the
pack by whatever means necessary.

15. In BC, 'flipping the bird' is considered a polite salute. This
gesture should always be returned.

Thank You,

The BC Registrar of Motor Vehicles

Thanks to Matt for the heads up on this.

4th Annual Weblog Awards

Jan 20, 2004 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | 6 Comments
It's time for the Bloggies. I do this just for fun; to share links, ideas and funny crap with my friends. The folks who have been nominated sure do deserve it. Last night I went through a bunch of the sites that I hadn't seen before and they are great. Content, obviously, is key to a great weblog and the writing on a lot of these blogs is nothing short of brilliant. These folks not only have talent but also the skill and time to really make a great looking weblog.

Me? I'm notoriously lazy. If I can get by without doing any real work that's usually the route I'll take (note: the lack of willingnes to redesign this site). However, I'm not really satisfied with living that way anymore. I feel like I'm missing out. After looking at thebeautiful sites in the best designed weblogs section like WhatDoIKnow, Kitta, Brookelyn.org, SimpleBits, and SixFoot6 I feel inspired to redesign. And after reading a bunch of the others it's obvious I have a long way to go as a writer as well.

Perhaps I need to look at a new software to run my Blog. MovableType looks nice but doesn't easily import from Nucleus (my current back end) so I'd have to put the archives for this old fella somewhere else. It could be done. Hmmmmm???

One must keep on truckin'!

CBS Cries Foul on PETA, MoveOn Super Bowl Ads

Jan 16, 2004 by Mike Browne in Movies and TV | 6 Comments
Good for CBS. Nixing ads from these controversial organizations is probably the smartest move by a media company in a long time. When I watch the Super Bowl I want to see fun ads like the Terry Tate, Office Linebacker ad from last year.

No one but bleeding heart liberals want to see ads attack George W and touting how socially responsible it is to get naked and not eat animals. Super Bowl is all about America and BBQ's. PETA and MoveOn would just be out of place - Pinko commie bastards.

Now, if only CBS could convince the Canadian networks to play the million dollar corporate ads and drop the Home Hardware, and Canadian Tire Ads. Ugh!

Ice Cube sighting in Vancouver

Jan 14, 2004 by Mike Browne in Movies and TV | 4 Comments
Carol spotted former NWA member Ice Cube, sans goatee, in downtown Vancouver standing around under a tent between the filming of scenes for his new movie, "Are We There Yet?". Which Carol thinks will stink. She can tell Ice Cube that while I run the other way.

I have always loved NWA's music. Dr Dre, Ice Cube, and the deceased Eazy E (as well as the lesser known band members), and later Snoop Dogg, have had a large part in the rap sound we now find so familiar. The classic Straght Outta Compton album was a turning point in music, let alone rap, and has inspired many of the generation rapping today. It was the genesis of true Gangsta Rap.

A cool celeb sighting, Carol. Did you do like when we saw Cher in LA on our trip there?

Carol (screaming excitedly): "Hi Cher!" (I took the picture)

Adoption post 3 - more letters

Jan 14, 2004 by Mike Browne in Adoption | 4 Comments
I recieved a response to my letter to Adoption Disclosure Service Program. It was another letter (snailmail, of course) with a form inside for me to fill out officially requesting contact with any member of my birth family (both sides), requesting non-identifying information such as known family history and medical history, to be put on the passive adoption reunion list and to recieve my certificate of adoption. I sent that back and have recieved another letter (more snailmail) with a confirmation that they have recieved my form, statistics about adoption reunions in Nova Scotia and a reading list to assist me in the feelings that may arise (and have already) in regards to my search and the results at various stages.

Also included in this letter is a heads up that the Adoption Disclosure Service Program is still processing request from April of 2001. Yes you read that right, three years ago. I have waited for almost 35 years, what's another 3? Now that I'm ready to know, it's a bloody eternity. I almost crapped myself when Carol opened the letter and read that to me over the phone. I wanted to complain immediately, but as there's no email address, I'm too cheap to phone and too lazy to write another letter. I guess this is the way it's supposed to be right now and I'll just have to wait.

I did however get a nice note from a birthmother who has seen my adoption posts and would like to share her experience with me. I'd be glad to read it. What a nice surprise.

Prions: When proteins attack

Jan 13, 2004 by Mike Browne in Downers | Add comment
Check out - Prions: When Proteins Attack on the Wired magazine site. It's scary to think that you can actually get a disease that your immune system doesn't even realize it has thus not even mounting a defense. variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease a.k.a. the infamous Mad Cow Disease is one of these.

A gentleman, in the VG Hospital in Halifax in 1993-94, whom I was personally an orderly for, eventually died of a 'suspected' case of 'sporadic' classic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

I sat with him day after day and watched him deteriorate to a mere shell of himself prior to his passing. It was not pretty. Even though they claimed it was sporadic CJD at the time, there was also talk of his possibly becoming infected via frequent trips to Europe and the ingestion of prion ridden meat whilst there.

Health Canada claims it wasn't until 2002 that the first 'diagnosed' case of variant CJD as caused possibly by an infected Bovine (cow) existed in Canada.

Who knows how long this has really been around and who may be infected?

New Mustang for 2005

Jan 12, 2004 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | 7 Comments
I must have one of these cars. They look just like the old Shelby. I love the retro muscle car style.

The following write up and photos completely ripped off from Car and Driver:

"One year after teasing the public with the Mustang concept, Ford unveiled the all-new 2005 Mustang in Detroit. Incorporating cues from 1960s Mustangs, the new pony car features styling that starts low and wedges upward toward the back. Retro reminders abound: the fish gills in the nose, the moon-size driving lamps on the GT’s grille, and the chrome medallion on the rump. Inside, the original Mustang’s squared-off, double-cowl dashboard theme returns. Chrome rings circle the large gauges, and an optional dress-up package adds textured, aluminized trim. The wispy-thin gauge numbers will be familiar to vintage Ford owners, and all Mustangs will feature driver-selectable backlight colors. Unlike the quarter-century-old Fox platform that underpins the current Mustang, the new car rides on the DEW98 platform, which is used by the Lincoln LS, Jaguar S-type, and Ford Thunderbird. The new platform sports a much longer wheelbase than the Fox (107.1 inches versus 101.3). It also features clipped overhangs; a better relation among the steering wheel, pedals, and shifter; and more distance from the front axle to the dash. The new platform should be less jiggly, with torsional rigidity of convertibles rising a claimed 100 percent over the old Mustang. Even so, curb weights should be within one percent of the current 3300-to-3500-pound Mustang, thanks in part to the use of prewelded, variable-thickness stamping blanks and an aluminum hood. Although the other DEW vehicles have all-independent suspensions, the 2005 Mustang goes without. That’s mainly to keep down costs, but it’s also to serve street racers and quarter-milers who love a live axle’s simplicity and cheap interchangeability. The SOHC 12-valve, 4.0-liter V-6 with 202 horsepower and 235 pound-feet opens the Mustang’s power résumé. More power can be had with the 4.6-liter V-8, which now features an aluminum block and receives the SOHC 3-valve aluminum cylinder heads and variable-cam-timing mechanism from the new F-150’s 5.4-liter V-8. Ford claims 300 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 315 pound-feet at 4500 rpm. Fitted with the Tremec five-speed manual (a five-speed auto is available on both V-8 and V-6) and running through the standard-across-the-board 8.8-inch, 3.31:1 rear end, the GT should easily lay down two rail lines of rubber with its standard 235/55WR-17 tires or optional 255/45 tires on 18-inch wheels. Expect 60 mph to whiz by in the low-five-second range in a manual V-8, somewhere around seven seconds for a V-6." more photos

Check out Full Screen QTVR photos from panoramas.dk. You'll need Quictime for this and givce it some time to download, but it's worth the effort. Awesome 360 degree panoramic photography.

Matt sent this one too.

To the moon, Alice! (again)

According to this article on MSNBC, President Bush is set to announce a return to the moon. For colonization perhaps? We've already passed 1999 so we can't count on a Commander Koenig experience.

We're also looking at colonizing Mars. But, is it ours to colonize?

Acid Trip Art

Jan 09, 2004 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | Add comment
Here is a series of 9 drawings done by an artist under the influence of LSD during US government experiments in the 1950's. It's interesting to see the progression of his art further and further into his psychedelic experience. It reminds me of art done by creative persons with schizophrenia during a bout of psychosis.

I never tried painting whilst tripping. Listening to Pink Floyd and having a discussion was tough enough. ;)

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned

Just before I go back to bed to moan and groan for another day I have to post this little gem. The above photo and the following series titled Cheating Husband should be enough to make all you potential (and current) philanderers out there think again. Not only has the boat been spray painted, take note off all the guy's stuff crammed into the boat and strewn about the lawn and even in the trees. In one picture you can see the guy's stuffed fish stuck on the trailer hitch. Yikes! Imagine coming home to that...

Question: What if was all a big misunderstanding and the "Kim" who's phone number this guy's wife found was a man as well?

I'm still sick...

Microsoft has plans to take on ... Apple?

It looks like Microsoft is developing their own multi media device, comparable to the Apple iPod. This could be a good thing. Perhaps they'll even make it affordable. Thanks to Chuff for the link.

The Worst Sex Scenes Ever

Jan 06, 2004 by Mike Browne in Movies and TV | Add comment
Hop on over to retroCRUSH for a look at the most unsexy sex scenes in film. Having seen all of these (I know it's sad) other than, thankfully, Entrapment and Body of Evidence, I must say the reviewer is bang on (excuse the pun).

Hey Allah!

Check out Saddam's an OutKast: Hey Allah!. Kind of crazy. Thanks to Todd the PR Dude for sending the link. As I'm an Outkast fan (we bought the new CD this weekend) it's even funnier.

Croc hunter out of his mind?

Jan 05, 2004 by Mike Browne in Movies and TV | Add comment

Here's the 'Crocodile Hunter' Steve Irwin holding his baby son, Bob, while feeding a giant crocodile with a dead chicken at Queenland Zoo in Queensland, Australia, January 1, 2004. People were a little upset (understandably). Irwin does seem a little out to lunch. Imagine this:

Irwin thinks, "Which hand was the baby in? Why am I holding this chicken? Bob?"

Smilin' Jack's Ass Awards 2003

Check out Smilin' Jack's Ass Awards 2003 at Chud.com. Some interesting opinions on movies from the past year. Some I haven't seen especially the one voted as best horror movie, The Eye. I guess I have to pick this one up. It beat 28 Days Later in the reviewers opinion.
