Getting off on a technicality

Apr 30, 2004 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | Add comment
Who said some cops were stupid? Not me. However, some are not exactly attentive when writing up a ticket which, as a legal document, has to contain exact information. As a result, someone who has broken the law can escape retribution even if caught redhanded. Take the tale of this creative gentleman in Auckland, New Zealand as case in point.

Thanks to Matt for the story.

Google files for an IPO

Apr 29, 2004 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | Add comment
Google has filed for an IPO. What does that mean? It's a good day for tech stocks perhaps. Everyone will be watching this one pretty closely. One amazing development is that the average everyday investor (like myself) can get involved. People will be cautios, but my guess is that it will take off right out of the gate.

Could it be time for dot-com boom v2.0? That would be nice. Especially considering the fact that I've made it through the whole boom/bust cycle fairly unscathed and relatively no worse for wear. In fact I'm way ahead. Not bad for a yutz like me.

Mulit

Apr 27, 2004 by Mike Browne in Movies and TV | Add comment
Viral filmmaking is being taken to another level by Absolut Pictures (yes, the vodka people). Check out MULIT, an interesting look at the origins of a bad haircut in India of all places. You'll notice fairly consistantly within viral films they aren't exactly commercials for the product sold under each brand name but have a representative attitude to more deeply ingrain the company's brand into our culture. Knowing that Absolut was involved gives one better insight into what lifestyle/philosophy they are trying to sell. I think the only place I saw any reference to Absolut was the strategic placement of the vodka bottle shape (which is the brand) as a stamp in the trailer and I presume the entire 10 minute film.

More from Absolute Pictures right here.

Stanley Cup Playoffs - Round 2 (so far)

Apr 26, 2004 by Mike Browne in Hockey Rocks | 7 Comments
No surprises to this point really...

The Flames vs Red Wings series is tied 1-1 after Detroit lost the first game and the pounded the tar out of Calgary in game 2. The Wings have held Canucks killer and Calgary captain Iginla off the scoreboard entirely for the series to this point. Iginla was so frustrated that he fought with Detroit's Hatcher in the third period (and got clobbered). I don't think the young Flames will hold up against the grizzled veterans in the Wings uniforms. My prediction? Red Wings in 6

The San José vs Colorado series is shaping up much like everyone predicted as well. Colorado just hasn't had the jam to keep up with the Sharks on their feeding frenzy. The Sharks lead the Avs 2-0. This one? Sharks in 4. Yep it's a sweep. Sorry Dufrane.

Canadians vs Lightning? I watched these teams play this weekend and P-U. talk about two teams who got lucky and fluked their way into the playoffs. The only players to speak of are on the Tampa Bay team and frankly they don't looks that great either. The mistakes I saw were horrific. I wish the Canucks had been Eastern Conference. The year would have ended differently. Yikes. Tampa's up 2-0. Prediction? Tampa in 5.

Toronto vs Flyers? Sorry Pauly but your Leafs are stinkin' up the joint. It's as though they've run out of gas as the Flyers go up 2-0 in the series. I hate to say it, but I see the Leafs gone in 6 games.

So that's it. All the Canadian teams will be golfing after round 2 and it will be the Flyers and San José in the final.

Shahada

Keeping up with the news in the Middle East is, to say the least, distressing. The recent bombings in Saudi Arabia's capital and daily death and carnage in Isreal and Iraq fill me with dread as to what's coming next. This video, on Shahada - death for Allah (windows media player required) shows how Palestinian children are encouraged to pursue Shahada as an ideal through harsh propoganda. They believe this life is unimportant. Death whilst killing infidels on the way to the next life is a most noble and highly rewarded act. Parents praise their children who die this way. Call me racist but it's hard not to sit in judgement of a culture that encourages murder and the suicide of it's own children.

I found the video link on Apechild.com.

Ottawa shit the bed...

Apr 20, 2004 by Mike Browne in Hockey Rocks | 1 Comment
I love hockey. Just because my Canucks are out for the season after the heartbreaker at GM Place last night to the Clagary Flambés (Misspelling on purpose. I'm still smarting) I needed a place to post other hockey related articles. I'm not one of these fans who says the season is over when my team is out, so I created a Hockey category for the blog. It's about the sport not just my favourite team.

Anyway, here goes:

Toronto 4 - Ottawa 2
Ottawa just couldn't pull it off. The Leafs beat up on them once again winning another series in the battle of Ontario. Next the Leafs are off to play Philly in the next round and we have to listen to Pauly rant for at least a few more games.

Here's CBC's take on the game.

Levels of a Hangover

Apr 20, 2004 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | Add comment
Carol sent me this:

One Star Hangover (*)
No pain. No real feeling of illness.
You're able to function relatively well. However, you are still parched.
You can drink 5 cokes and still feel this way.
For some reason, you are craving a steak & fries.

Two Star Hangover (**)
No pain, but something is definitely amiss.
You may look okay, but you have the mental capacity of a staple gun.
The coffee you are chugging is only increasing your rumbling gut,
which is still tossing around the fruity pancake from the 3:00 AM
Waffle House excursion. There is some definite havoc being wreaked upon your bowels.

Three Star Hangover (***)
Slight headache. Stomach feels crappy.
You are definitely not productive. Anytime a girl walks by you gag
because her perfume reminds you of the flavored schnapps shots
your alcoholic friends dared you to drink.
Life would be better right now if you were home in your bed watching Lucy reruns.
You've had 4 cups of coffee, a gallon of water, 3 iced teas and a diet Coke ---
yet you haven't peed once.

Four Star Hangover (****)
Life sucks. Your head is throbbing.
You can't speak too qickly or else you might puke.
Your boss has already lambasted you for being late and has given
you a lecture for reeking of booze. You wore nice clothes, but
that can't hide the fact that you only shaved one side of your
face. For the ladies, it looks like you put your make-up on
while riding the bumper cars. Your eyes look like one big red
vein, and even your hair hurts. Your sphincter perpetual spasm,
and the first of about five Shits you take during the day
brings water to the eyes of everyone who enters the bathroom.

Five Star Hangover (*****)
You have a second heartbeat in your head,
which is actually annoying the employee who sits in the next cube.
Vodka vapor is seeping out of every pore and making you dizzy.
You still have toothpaste crust in the corners of your mouth from
brushing your teeth in an attempt to get the remnants of the poop fairy out.
Your body has lost the ability to generate saliva so your tongue is suffocating you.
You don't have the foggiest idea who the hell the stranger was
passed out in your bed this morning. Any attempt to defecate
results in a fire hose like discharge of alcohol-scented fluid
with a rare 'floater' thrown in. The sole purpose of this
'floater' seems to be to splash the toilet water over your ass.
Death sounds pretty good about right now....

THINGS THAT ARE DIFFICULT TO SAY WHEN YOU'RE DRUNK:

THINGS THAT ARE VERY DIFFICULT TO SAY WHEN YOU'RE DRUNK:

Thanks, but I don't want to have sex.
Nope, no more booze for me.
Sorry, but you're not really my type.
Good evening officer isn't it lovely out tonight.
Oh, I just couldn't.
No one wants to hear me sing.
Sorry I'm being such a jackass.

What's your ecological footprint?

Apr 19, 2004 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | 1 Comment
I did the test at MyFootprint.org and this is what I came up with for Carol and I:

Category Global Hectares

Food 3.1, Mobility 1, Shelter 1.5, Goods/Services 2.6 = Total Footprint 8.2

In comparison, the average ecological footprint in your country is 8.8 global hectares per person. Worldwide, there exist 1.8 biologically productive global hectares per person.

If everyone lived like you, we would need 4.6 planets.

Still quite high even though we're slightly below the Canadian national average. Pretty shocking stuff, considering we do try and conserve.

Canucks 5 - Flames 4 in triple OT

Apr 18, 2004 by Mike Browne in Go Canucks Go | Add comment
The Canucks played their asses off to go up 4 - 0 and then they gave up. Calgary took advantage of their weakness and charged back with 4 unanswered goals to tie the game at 4 in the third in game 6.

Two plus overtime periods were needed before Vancouver's Brendan Morrison scored to break the deadlock after midnight Calgary time.

No matter who wins tomorrow night, both of these teams have fought hard. Calgary has certainly stepped up in the series suprising cocky Canuck fans like myself.

One more game. At the end of tomorrow night's match one team will move on to the next round while the other goes golfing.

May the best team win. I hope the best team is the Canucks. I guess we'll see.

Flames 4 - Canucks 0 (waaah!)

Apr 14, 2004 by Mike Browne in Go Canucks Go | Add comment
The Canucks lost, and lost badly. Disheartened after a shorthanded marker in the second period by the Flames. The guys just didn't seem to be there after that. Sad. The Flames played hard, hit hard and maintained their passion throughout the game. I hate to say it (and even though I still hate them) the Flames earned the win.

This kind of play on the part of the Canucks isn't even acceptable for a preseason game. But this is the playoffs. Not good guys. Not good at all.

Maybe it's all 'a ploy' like Frosty said on CKNW this morning. But I doubt it. I hope this isn't the momentum that the Flames were looking for coming back to Vancouver on Thursday.

Who is the Greatest Canadian?

Apr 13, 2004 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | 5 Comments
CBC is looking for us, the public, to vote for The Greatest Canadian. They've given lots of examples of great Canadians, but all are either artists, politicians, sports stars or people who have gained celebrity and noteriety through other means.

There are no average shmoes in the running. That is why I am offering to be the sacrificial lamb for you folks. I am a 'Great Canadian' example of mediocrity and banality. What more could you ask for? I'll take one for the team. You can nominate me, Mike Browne, with a write in vote by filling in the form on this page if you like.

Or you could browse the historically boring list of regulars like Laura Secord, Louis Riel, Emily Carr and choose one of them with the other sheep.

Paul Anka? Interesting singer but come on...

I'm not sure we'll find the 'Greatest Canadian' at all this way. It will be interesting to see who gets chosen.

Ribeiro proves Habs suck...

Apr 13, 2004 by Mike Browne in Go Canucks Go | 8 Comments
HABS SUCK!

I watched the game in which Ribeiro took his dive at centre ice, flopping around doing the funky chicken. What a ham.

The game's momento was in Boston's favour at the time and after getting lightly tapped in a hit by Boston forward Mike Knuble Ribeiro 'took one for the team'. What a jerk. The whistle blew, play came to a halt and this assbag lay on the ice in apparent agony. The trainer rushed out to assist him and in moments he was on his feet and back on the bench smirking at the Boston bench. He did everything but stick out his tongue.

Montreal hung on to win and the Bruins are still fuming at Ribeiro. He'd better watch out next game. My bet is that retribution is on the way. Of course Montreal's website says he's not a sure thing for tonight's game stating he has an 'upper body' injury. Yeah, his head no doubt. My bet is that keeping him out of the line up might save him from a real injury. Pretty cowardly stuff.

No Canuck would ever do anything like that. We've seen well known Canucks shit disturber Jarko Ruutu take his little dives but nothing nearly as flamboyant as this slime bucket, idiot Ribeiro. I predict some really hard hits on this turkey next game and once a player gets that kind of rep, like Ruutu, they rarely get a call in their favor short of being beheaded.

Camel Spider

Apr 13, 2004 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | 2 Comments
Carol just loves spiders. Every now and again I'll a squeal from another room as though there's a rapist in the house. I come running only to find my wife, hair on end, pointing at a spider. Seeing as she grew up in Saudi Arabia she has most likely seen a Camel Spider (thanks to Matt for the link), if they really do exist.

They're a hell of a lot bigger than the Brown Recluse Spider a.k.a. Hobo Spider. But apparently the Hobo Spider's bite can be nasty. There are lots of Hobo Spider stories around the web. Yikes!

Now she'll be really afraid.

Canucks 2 - Flames 1

Apr 12, 2004 by Mike Browne in Go Canucks Go | Add comment
The Canucks and Flames both fought hard last in Calgary night. Vancouver came out on top with one more goal. The only one they allowed all night was on a defensive miscue; not the goaltender's fault at all.

However, it looks as though Dan Cloutier, Vancouver's netminder, may be out for the rest of the play-offs as he left with a knee injury late in the first period. Johan Hedberg stepped in giving the Canucks what they needed between the pipes. People (myself included) had some misgivings about Cloutier. I guess our wishes have come true in a way. I do hope Clouts is okay though. You never know when he'll be back. I hope this injury isn't too costly for the Canucks.

The Canucks now lead the series 2 - 1 with the next game in Calgary on Tuesday night at 6:30pm Pacific.

Flames 2 (booooo!) - Canucks 1

Apr 10, 2004 by Mike Browne in Go Canucks Go | 2 Comments
No one really expected Vancouver to sweep the series. The result of last night's game made it impossible. But not for the lack of trying. Calgary got two lucky bounces early and held the Canucks to only a single goal.

Canucks need a bit of 'finish' and maybe a touch more 'puck luck' and things will be back on track. Sustained effort night after night will win them the series. They are the better team after all.

Game 1: Canucks 5 - Flames 3

Apr 08, 2004 by Mike Browne in Go Canucks Go | 5 Comments
I did not so badly on points in the hockey pool last night. The 'big line' for Vancouver did very well, especially on the powerplay. Brendan Morrsion had a great night coming out of it with three points and being awarded the games first star.

Vancouver played a great first period, a so-so second and an awesome third. Defensively they looked great. The first two Flames goals were garbage. I know, they still count, but the scoring chances weren't coming fast and furious for Calgary. They just got some lucky bounces. Let's hope the Canucks can keep it up for three more games and sweep the series.

There were a ton of powerplay chances for both teams as the clown fest known as the NHL refereeing staff couldn't just let the game play out. They called everything including a very questionable 'too many men' penalty against Vancouver which put the team down two men and cost them a goal. Perhaps we should let the players play the game. What do you think? Stupid zebras!

Whatever. We won anyway.

Flames suck (Sorry Cathy)! GO CANUCKS GO!

L.A. Agency's Link to Canada Angers ACTRA

Apr 08, 2004 by Mike Browne in Movies and TV | Add comment
The Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists (ACTRA) has stated that it is "incensed to hear that Telefilm Canada [the Canadian government's film and TV financier] is using taxpayer's money to buy Hollywood talent."

As a Canadian actor I understand this. Spend taxpayer dollars on talent at home. Isn't there a largere problem here though? Why not amalgamate ACTRA with it's US counterpart SAG creating one large union that spans borders. That way we Canadians can easier get the the US market where the real money is in film. In a perfect world maybe. Will it happen? I doubt it.

Baby walkers banned

Apr 07, 2004 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | 3 Comments
It's about time that these infant death traps were banned in Canada. I'm not sure why it took so long. Perhaps the federal Liberals have been in the back pocket of the ultra-powerful baby walkers lobbyists.

When I was a child, before all the real dangers were apparent, my folks had me in an olive green walker tooling around the house like a madman. One day, according to mom, I was really cooking along in my walker, most likely chasing the long suffering 'Miss Kitty', and I hit the basement door. The door popped open and I went crashing down the stairs. I'm told I was unconscious on the concrete floor for a few minutes, which could explain a lot. My walker was totalled. Thankfully, after being checked by our family doctor (this was when they still made house calls) I was deemed to be okay. I'm sure he missed some brain damage as has been evidenced by my later behaviour and sadly lacking decision making.

After that Mom and Dad installed a chain lock on the door to prevent further accidents.

Though I'm too young to remember the incident, I still say buh-bye walkers.

It's NHL Stanley Cup playoffs time! We have a pool at work here (of course). I had to pick 7 forwards, 4 defenceman and 1 goalie. Points work like this, 2 points for a goal, 1 point for an assist, 1 point for a goalie win, 2 points for a shut out. The picks I made were as a fan, believe me not because of any vast hockey knowledge. It's more like a wish list; the people I would cheer for. Here are my picks:

Forwards:
Markus Naslund - Vancouver
Daniel Sedin - Vancouver
Mats Sundin - Toronto
Joe Thornton - Boston
Mark Recchi - Philadelphia
Martin St. Louis - Tampa Bay
Glen Murray - Boston

Defensemen:
Ed Jovanovski - Vancouver
Mattias Ohlund - Vancouver
Bryan McCabe - Toronto
Sergei Gonchar - Boston

Goalie:
Ed Belfour - Toronto

Yes there are Leafs in my picks. They can go as far as they like as long as they lose in game 7 of the finals to my Canucks 5 - 2. My red hot burning hatred for Detroit prevented me from choosing any players from that team. And, in true Canucks fan fashion, I could not bring myself to choose players from any other teams in the Western Conference as they don't matter. Insane I know, but what the heck.

I chose Canucks (GO CANUCKS GO!) in every category but one - goaltending. Although Clouts has had a good season I'm not too keen on him in pressure situations. It's way too easy to get to the guy. I like Toronto's Belfour as a net minder. He's cool as a cucumber and good for a couple shut outs even if TO only goes so far.

It all begins tonight with Vancouver meeting Calgary. I'd like to see Vancouver in 4 straight (stinkin' Flames), but my guess is that it will be Vancouver in 6.

As a side note, here's a funny song (2.62 MB MP3) from a Toronto radio station about how Ottawa is going to choke. You can't download it Pauly. It's an MP3. That would be wrong. ;)

Thanks to PR Todd for the link.

Oxymora: The List. They've only posted to J so far but it's interesting nonetheless.

Gates is second... maybe

According to this story IKEA founder overtakes Gates as world's richest. This may not be so. There's a bit of a scrap (thanks Jackson) over who's got more dough.

Who cares? They have more money than me. And, judging from my tour of the Microsoft campus last Friday, and seeing Gate's house from the bridge on the way there, I'm pretty sure he doesn't really care either.

It was 10 years ago today...

I can't believe it but it's been ten years today since Kurt Cobain was found dead of a self inflicted gunshot wound to the head in the garage of his Seattle home. I was (and still am) a huge Nirvana fan and was devastated by the news. I was going through a rough period my self at the time and could really relate to why someone my want to call it quits rather than continue. What a sad day. Cobain's death was to my generation like the death of Elvis in the 1970's to that generation; a heart break of the greatest proportion especially considering his last few months and the mode of death he chose.

Carol and I even traveled to the Cobain home and hung out for a day around the park beside the house. The large memorial was over, but there were still people hanging out almost a week later when we were there. Apparently Courtney had been holding seances in the garage and even gave away a few of Kurt sweaters. There was a small shrine near a tree at which people left various drugs, notes, cigarettes and other items as 'sacrifice' to their dead idol. Courtney had even ome out and tacked her own note to the tree thanking the fans for the support and stating that if we wished contact she was willing.

Everyone was too scared of her even then and left her alone as far as we saw. The only real discourse we had with her was her screaming 'what f***ing time is it, man?' through the bushes when she was leaving to run some errands. I think Carol was actaully the person who answered.

Anyway, ten years has gone by fast, but Cobain's musical influence is still felt and sorely missed.

Day of Deliverance

I play a lot of first person shooters online. So much so that I've been the member of a gaming clan called the OSS Brigade. Most of what we play together are war simulations like Call of Duty, Battlefield 1942 and Medal of Honor. Although we've been playing together for quite some time (some of us for years) we have never met face to face. At least not until Friday.

I traveled to Seattle to meet Doc (Stan from San José, CA), Treacherous (Joe from Seattle, WA - our host) and Andy Dufrane (Aidan from Denver, CO) pictured below:

Doc Treacherous and Andy Dufrane

We had a great time together. It was just like meeting old friends actually. Not everyone you meet on the Internet is a freak. Good thing considering what we did that day.

Anyway we had a great day. Joe took us on a tour of the Microsoft campus, where he works, then took us 4-wheeling out in the woods to endulge us in his hobby - shooting. We literally had a blast. Joe has quite and arsenal. Here he is with an M-14. Although he only took a portion of it, there were still a lot of weapons. I got to fire a .44 Magnum (Dirty Harry's gun) as well as various others like the ones we use in the game. My favourite, however, was the AR-15 (a.k.a. the M-16).

For someone who's not used to shooting I did fairly well blasting away at pop cans and other things. No one got hurt, although from the look of this picture, it appears I was about to shoot myself in the crotch.

"Aim higher dummy! The can is on my head!"

Afterward we went back to Joe's and had a nice dinner with his family and watched South Park the movie. All in all a great experience. Thanks Joe! Nice to meet you Stan and Aidan! I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Canucks 5 - Oilers 2

The Canucks did it. With their win last night, in the last game of the season, the Canucks stole the Northwestern Conference crown away from the Avalanche and squashed any hopes of a play off birth for the Oilers. It was a hard fought game and the sixth win in a row for the Canucks. What a way to finish off the regular season.

A highlight of the night was at the end of the game whne Todd Bertuzzi made an appearance to give his jersey to a fan in the traditional end of season "Jersey Off Our Backs" ceremony. The ovation was long and loud and Bertuzzi looked quite moved by the support.

Another banner for the ceiling at GM Place.

The play-offs begin on Wednesday night with game 1 seeing the Canucks at home against Calgary in a best of 7 in series G of the Western conference finals.

Canucks 4 - Sharks 1

I was in Seattle and couldn't watch the game. I got home late and was happy when I heard the score. Seeing as the Canucks have had some trouble with San José it was nice to see such a decisive win.

Here the official Canucks.com recap.

Canucks stay in first... Let's hope tonight's game against the Oilers goes well as if the Canucks win they win their division! Last game of the regular season begins in less than a half hour.

Canucks 2 - Ducks 1

I couldn't watch the game last night as I was at a Bonus Party for work (and did quite well I might add). I did, however, listen to all of the post game buzz.

Canucks defensemen Sammy Salo overcame his scoring drought with the game winning goal with only 21 seconds left on the clock in the third period.

With the Canucks win, and Colorado's overtime loss to Minnesota, Vancouver now sits atop the Northwest Division. If all stays as it is over th final two games of the season Vancouver will be playing Calgary in the first round of the play offs. Still, anything can happen...

Hail Mary Sportsbook

Apr 01, 2004 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | 1 Comment

It's that time of year when it seems like there are so many opportunities to make a little extra cash with a side bet or two on sports like NCAA Basketball, or the NBA and NHL playoffs. There are a lot of sportsbooks online to choose from when it comes to who to bet with. My money's on Hail Mary Sportsbook. No one throws it up like Hail Mary. That's for sure.

The have so much to offer, from their excellent casino and sportsbook to the hot chicks they have on staff waiting to take your cash. One of the best things about the company is that Hail Mary President and CEO Down 'n' Dirty Sanchez personally gaurantees you'll have a great experience!

...and so do I for that matter.
