The roots of Hallowe'en

Oct 30, 2004 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | 1 Comment
Tomorrow is the big night when all the little ghouls, goblins and witches show up to say, "trick or treat". Kids now are dressed mostly spiderman and princesses - they're missing the point if you ask me. I know the whole dead thing is scary to kids, but isn't it something they're going to have to deal with eventually anyway? The culture in the US and Canada is one of 'if we don't deal with it, it's not happening' in regards to death. Mexican children are very accustomed to the idea of death and probably less fearful. So rather than dressing little Johnny/Janey up like a cartoon character stick them in a trusty old bedsheet and send them out into the night as a spooky ghost and scare the crap out of them with stories of 'the afterlife'. No kid of mine would be a frickin' sissy spiderman. (Probably why I don't have any). I'm such a cruel bastard.

Think about the roots of the day as you read below.

Blatantly stolen from MSNBC:

Celtic Samhain - In the fifth century B.C., Celts who lived in what is now Ireland, Britain and northern France celebrated New Year – called Samhain (pronounced Sow-en) – on Nov. 1. They believed that on Oct. 31, Samhain eve, the veil between the living and the dead was lifted, and that spirits would search for living bodies to possess. To frighten the spirits away, villagers would extinguish the fires in their homes, making them frigid and unwelcoming, and dress up in ghoulish attire, noisily parading around town in an unruly and destructive manner. Some accounts tell of how the Celts would burn at the stake a person who was believed to have already been possessed as a warning to the other spirits.

Roman Pomona Day - After the Romans invaded Britain in the first century A.D., they merged their Pomona Day festival, also celebrated on Nov. 1 and dedicated to their goddess of fruits and gardens, with the Celtic holiday. The Romans were said to have substituted the sacrifice of humans with burning effigies, a custom that was transferred to England’s Guy Fawkes Day after the notorious attempt to blow up parliament in 1605.

Christian All Saints and All Souls Day - In the ninth century, Christians began to celebrate All Saints Day (All Hallow’s Eve) on Nov. 1 and later All Souls Day on Nov. 2. Present-day trick-or-treating is thought to have originated with Christians going door to door begging for “soul cakes,” or bread with currants. The more cakes the beggars received, the more prayers they would say on behalf of the donor’s deceased relatives.

Irish bring Halloween to America - Irish bring Halloween to America: The mix of autumnal harvest traditions was transported to the United States by Irish immigrants fleeing their country’s potato famine in the 1840’s, and the jack-o’-lantern custom was probably brought to America with them. According to folklore, Jack -- a wayward drunkard who tricked the devil -- was denied access to heaven and hell. But the devil gave Jack a single ember to light his way through the emptiness, and he placed the ember inside a hollowed-out turnip to keep it from going out. When the Irish landed in the United States, they found that pumpkins were more plentiful than turnips and made their “Jack’s lanterns” out of them instead.

2-Day Film School

Today is day one of Dov S-S Simens' 2-Day Film School™ for me. I'm kind of excited. As I have a 24/7 parking space at work I thought I'd save 18 bucks for parking over the next the two days, come early and walk down to Robson Square for the course. I thought I might as well grab a cup o' Joe and my CD case that I forgot yesterday here at my desk. I'm at work at 7 a.m. on a Saturday which is unusal to say the least. I've been interrogated by the CSR's and Support folks already. Matt S just asked if I forgot to go home... I'm dumb but not that dumb.

Oh well. I'm off. Wish me luck. This could be fun.

Red Sox win the World Series!

Oct 28, 2004 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | Add comment

Looks like the Bambino's curse has been lifted. The Boston Red Sox have finally won a World Series, after 86 years of bad luck. This year was their year. Congrats Sox!

Perhaps a part of the reason they won was all the bad karma that those assholish Yankees fans created for themselves. The cleat may be on the other foot from now on. They've already gone down in baseball history as the only team to ever blow a 3-0 lead in a series; and to their arch-rivals. Serves you right. Smug Bastids.

Victory couldn't be sweeter for Red Sox fans. Lance, Neil and Jackson are like giddy little school girls in a candy store this morning.

Perhap the Cubs will win one soon. It's been 96 years for them. They haven't won since 1908. They're cursed too. There's definitive proof. Remember Steve Bartman? Has he been murdered yet?

Oh yeah, Yankees suck!

A cool (and related) Nike Ad.

I am a self-admitted practicing fart aficionado. I do enjoy a good toot of my own. As Fat Bastard in Autin Powers says, "we do love our own brand". And, although smelling a stranger's gaseous emission is rather disturbing to the point of near vomitus, I do appreciate the sound and force with which each crepitation is expelled. I was pleasantly surprised to discover the following video of a gentleman whom, through the magic of video post production I presume, has become, in my vast fart judging experience, one of the most potent gasbags ever to have walked the Earth. Ashlee Blames Gastric Distress

Oct 26, 2004 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | 2 Comments
MTV.com - News -Ashlee Blames Gastric Distress For 'SNL' Lip-Synch Snafu

What a load of crapola. I have been taking medication for this disorder for years. I suffer from a severe form of it and when it flares up it is nothing short of horrific. However, the only reason for a flare up is not having access to my medication which, with only one pill, basically cures the entire situation for the next 24 hours. In all those years, even at it's worst, I have never, ever, lost my voice.

Perhaps she really does have acid reflux, but using it as an excuse for why you were lipsynching is just plain assinine. I heard her caterwauling the same tune on the Radio Music Awards last night. She did it live. You know how I could tell? Because she sucked. That and Moosh, our dog, peed herself before she ran to hide from the auditory assault.

More on this crap from MSNBC.

Iraq safe?

Oct 26, 2004 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | Add comment
Not so much. There's a huge cache of weapons missing from a US controlled site in Iraq. Things go awry on Ol' GW's watch again. Perhaps we'll hear that John Kerry snuck over to Iraq and stole the weapons himself. It has to be spun somehow. The cat's kind of out of the proverbial bag.

Science fiction writer William Gibson sums it up pretty well.

UPDATE: Here comes the spin ... here too (or is it). I don't know who to believe. Apparently 60 Minutes had planned to release this on the eve of the election in (I assume) the hope of foiling Bush's re-election with more spin. Count me glad I don't live in the US and have to sort out this mess of lies prior to voting. At least in Canada we know ALL of the politicians are twits and con people. We're rotten at spin and re-elect these goofs al the time even when we know the facts. For clarification please see the sponsorship scandal and the oh-so whacky Governor General's lavish spending (and she's an appointed official for God's sake).

Oh Canada ...

I'm so confused. What better time for a picture of Oolong the Rabbit (who died tragically in January) with a cakeroll on his head? Just for you Kelly G. And I quote, "What is the gift?"

Ashlee Simpson shits the bed...

Oct 25, 2004 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | 5 Comments
Adrants: Ashlee Simpson Croaks On Live TV
I was channel surfing to purposely miss the second Ashlee Simpson performance of the night and completely missed out. The first one was terrible. She was obviously, lipsynching and very badly. It appears things went really awry for the second performance. Now that I've seen it, in a way, I'm glad I missed it. Having been on stage I know how painful it is to foul up in front of everyone.

However, the whole walking off the stage thing isn't really cool. The performers creed is "the show must go on". You are there for the audience not for you. Perhaps the fact that this person hasn't really earned her place could be the reason this happened. She even blamed the band. "booooooooo!" She can't dance, she can't sing and doesn't have the guts to fight through a boo-boo. Age and experience? Maybe. But still not an excuse. There are plenty of kid performers who wouldn't just walk away. My bet is we won't be seeing much more of her except to make fun of her. Perhaps her big sister will help her out of this jam (as I'm sure she helped her into it) by throwing more money at the spin machine.

Ashlee, take your dopey pants and silly boots to some dance and singing classes and fire your stylist. *sigh*

I know. Harsh. I guess I just resent people having fame and fortune handed to them while I actually have to work for it.

Check out this song (2mb mp3). It's a song by Anthrax called Got the Time. I've been looking for it forever, but didn't know the name of it. Well now I do. I just had to share. Weeeeeeee! I thought it was "Chicken in my head!" but the actual lyrics are:

Wake Up, Got Another Day to Get,
Through Now, Got Another Man to See
Gotta Call Him on the Telephone Ay-o
Gotta Find a Piece of Paper
Sit Down, Got Another Letter to Write,
Think Hard, Gotta Get a Letter Just Right
Little Ringin' on the Telephone Oh No,
Gotta Write Another Letter
No Such Thing as Tomorrow
All We Want
Two, Three, Go!
Time, Got the Time Tick Tick Tickin' in My Head
Time, Got the Time Tick Tick Tickin' in My Head
Time, Got the Time Tick Tick Tickin' in My Head
Tickin' in My Head, Tickin' in My Head, Tickin' in My Head
If I, Tell Ya What I'm Doing Today
Will You, Shut up and Get out of My Way
Someone Ask Me What the Time Is, I Don't Know
Only Know I Gotta Go Now
No Time, Tryin' Ta Get a Watch Repaired
No Time, Never Got a Thing to Wear
Little Ringin' on the Telephone
Oh No, Hear a Ringin' in My Head Now
No Such Thing as Tomorrow
No Such Thing as Tomorrow
All We Want
Two, Three, Go!
Time, Got the Time Tick Tick Tickin' in My Head
Time, Got the Time Tick Tick Tickin' in My Head
Time, Got the Time Tick Tick Tickin' in My Head
Tickin' in My Head, Tickin' in My Head
Tickin' in My Head!

Chicken in my head is way more fun.

Retirement Investing

Oct 07, 2004 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | 2 Comments
If you had purchased $1000.00 of Nortel stock one year ago, it would now be worth $49.00.

With Enron, you would have had $16.50 left of the original $1,000.00.

With WorldCom, you would have had less than $5.00 left.

But, if you had purchased $1,000.00 worth of beer one year ago, drank all the beer, then turned in the cans for the aluminum recycling REFUND, you would have had $214.00.

Based on the above, current investment advice is to drink heavily and recycle. It's called the 401-Keg Plan

Thanks to my old friend and math wizard Ken for this little tidbit. However, investing in this way would not be prudent for someone like myself as I would, no doubt, drink the profit using the money saved by cashing in cans to buy more beer. Sad but true.

Yes, the South Park creators are at it again. I guess Matt and Trey should have read their contracts a little more carefully. MSNBC - SpaceShipOne soars into history and wins $10 million. Too bad it goes to Richard Branson, the Virgin billionaire. Space travel now. What's next? Vacations on the moon? How Space 1999 is that?

Kat Kam

This live web cam: Kat Kam is looking at the Burrard Street Bridge in downtown Vancouver. I work in a building down on the corner of Burrard and Pacific and I have a funny feeling this camera is either in the same building or very close by building as the angles look fairly familiar. I'm going to do some more research to see if I can find out where it is exactly.

UPDATE: The camera is not in our building. If you look at the panoramic shot and scroll all the way to the right in the enlarged veiw the building I work in the the ugly brick building on the corner continuing up Burrard and onto Pacific.

Accordin to this article at Hollywood North Report - Canada's Premier Film and TV News Source, George A Romero's 4th film in the Dead series starts shooting in Toronto on October 11. How freakin' cool is that? Still it is TO. Perhaps we can convince them Vancouver is better. That way I can get me a part. *sigh* Dare to dream.

Definition of Bravery:

True bravery is arriving home late after a boy's night out, being assaulted by your wife with a broom, and still having the guts to ask - "Are you cleaning, or were you flying somewhere?"

Thanks Monkee.

Ministry - Evil Doer Tour Vancouver

Oct 01, 2004 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | 1 Comment
The short story: Loud and Fun! Classic Ministry!

Carol and I went to the Ministry show last night. We had a gas! There was the usual possé of whackos that we see at the metal shows we go to. I guess it's a fairly small community so we often see the same folks from show to show. The first band, Hanzel und Gretyl, were great. Their set was extremely loud and mostly in German (which I don't understand), but cool all the same. It was unsettling to see a creepy German dude marching around dressed up like the Kaiser with two skinny ugly chicks and a drummer who kept standing up on his kit and flipping off the crowd. They started off with a song in English called "Third Reich from the Sun". Here's a sample: 3rd-reich-sample.mp3 (240kb MP3). You can hear the whole thing on their website under the "interactive" section. We must buy the CD. Here's a review of Uber Alles.

The second band was an industrial musical intitution know as My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult. In a word: sucked. I was extremely disappointed by them and after a few songs I was ready to slap the lead singer, Groovie Mann, who was stoned out of his melon, mumbling nonsense and saying things like "I don't know where I am". Nice. I paid a portion of $40 per tickets to watch this asshole fall all over himself. Not much better was the 200+ pound fat chick singing backup. She was squeezed into a corset she was pouring out of from all possible seams and creases. Gross. I need brainwashing to erase the memory of it. After about 3 songs I felt like a hostage in a bank hold up just waiting to be set free.

Last but surely not least was freakshow Al Jourgensen and Ministry. Holy shit! They were great. The first thing we saw was someone in a George W Bush mask flipping off the crowd. Then AL J came out and beat the tar out of George. He really wailed on the guy. They just went full throttle and didn't stop. The band did a pile of songs from their latest offering, Houses of the Molé (which I love) and tore the place up with NWO, Just one Fix and Thieves to name a few of the 'oldies'. The place went nuts for those. I was extremely happy with what I saw and heard for the main set and would have went away satisfied at just that.

The encore, however, went even further. A person who I didn't recognize at first (as he was so fat) came out on stage and began ranting about Geroge W Bush attempting to reinstate the draft and working behind the scenes with the Canadian government to prevent draft dodging by changing laws 'behind our backs'. Who was this? Why, Jello Biafra of Dead Kennedys fame of course. He has worked with Al Jourgensen on a number of projects, not the least of which was a band called Lard. We were treated to some Lard live last night with Jello on vocals. A very cool surprise.

Jello, lay off the pasta and doughnuts. It doesn't look good on you.

We went home with smiles on our faces and ringing ears (they're still going)...
