Daingerfield screening and some news

Aug 29, 2005 by Mike Browne in Filmmaking | 1 Comment

Remember that TV pilot I was 2nd Assistant Director on in the spring? We had a great time. Last night Michael Daingerfield and company gave a screening for cast and crew of Daingerfield at the VFS theatre.

Happy Anniversary Carol!

Holy crap Mrs B! It's been seven years already. I know you like the photo on your blog, but I like this one. Its more traditional I know, but nice.

We haven't done too badly at all. In fact we're dealing fairly well... through thick and thin etc etc. I love you Mrs B. Enjoy your spa day.

We're back in BC

What a great trip we had. I'm still processing all this emotional stuff, so I haven't been blogging much. I'm finding it a bit hard to express what I feel right now. All I know is that its positive, but being someone who doesn't do emotional well this is fairly overwhelming.

If you're not bored already there's more here (Pauly and the zookeeper should look again. There's more) ---->

More relatives

Lookie! It's Dianne, me and Phil my half brother.

On Sunday we went to Truro to meet brother Phil and some more family. We met at brother J-P and wife Andrea's place for some food and chit chat. Andrea sure has her hands full with Max and Carlie (two great kids) while J-P is working in Alberta. There were so many people to meet I hope I have them all in somewhat flattering poses.

Meeting Dianne

Aug 20, 2005 by Mike Browne in Adoption | 16 Comments

I spent the day with Dianne, my birth mother, yesterday. Above is the first picture of us together after 36 years.

We had a pleasant day 'catching up' on 36 years of what's happening and I enjoyed looking at her family photos. We met her co-workers (more like family and friends if you ask me), went to New Minas, a.k.a. New Mindless, to get birthday cakes for upcoming events and then watched Boondock Saints (she loves movies as much as I do) and just talked and talked. I couldn't have asked for a better day. She gave me the photo a friend of hers sneakily took of me in the hospital just days old, my hospital bracelet, a copy of the 'letter of apprehension' from my adoption and the letter given her by the social worker once I had been placed with Mom and Dad.

More after the jump. ---->

We're here

Aug 18, 2005 by Mike Browne in Adoption | 3 Comments
Arrived at 10:42 pm here in NS last night. Drove our fancy schmancy Buick Renedezvous like a crazy person to get to Mom and Dad's place here and crashed out. Slept like a log and now it's time to blog. Photos and more updates are on the way.

Ready or Not...

Aug 16, 2005 by Mike Browne in Adoption | 5 Comments
Here we come. The next few hours see us packing, sleeping, riding, flying and driving... how exciting. I'm feeling rather verklemt. Off to Nova Scotia to meet more family. Friday is the big day. Dianne and I have a lot of catching up to do; 36 years worth. I'm going to her place to meet, then she's taking me to meet her friends and co-workers and then its dinner on me.

Expect blogging and photos. Dad finally has a computer so I don't even have to take my laptop. Wish us luck...

Wicker Man - day 10 of 44

Aug 11, 2005 by Mike Browne in Filmmaking | 3 Comments
More boiling on Wicker Man today. My brain and skin are cooked. The feel around set is that people know they're involved in something that might be pretty good. Nick cage is "on". Neat working on stuff you know a lot of folks will see.

Today we were in Langley and having quiet was a bit of a nightmare. We were situated between two airports, Langley and Abbottsford, and small planes were flying overhead constantly. When it was planes it was trains blowing their horns or the sewage truck draining the honeywagon firing up his engine in the middle of a shot. There was even a hot air balloon floating overhead near wrap firing his gas to stay in the air. Argh! But, we got everything we needed.

I'm off to Bordertown and Islandtown with "B camera" tomorrow for some exterior pick-ups. I'll bang off some shots of Bordertown with my Canon for a giggle while I'm there. Then I'm back in Langley to shoot until at least 1:00 am.

And for James asking about cast on the flick:
From IMDb Pro - Leelee Sobieski and Ellen Burstyn are joining Nicolas Cage in Neil LaBute's indie The Wicker Man, produced by Millenium Films, Equity Pictures and Emmett/Furla Films. A remake of a 1973 British horror film, Wicker Man centers on a police officer (Cage) who is investigating the disappearance of a girl in a small cultlike community. Sobieski plays a barmaid who is Cage's confidant. Burstyn plays the head of the cult. The film is shooting in Vancouver.

I'm not sure that's accurate. I have yet to see or hear any noise about Leelee Sobieski. She is here in town on Uwe Boll's Dungeon Seige, so who knows.

Lindros in T.O.

Aug 11, 2005 by Mike Browne in Hockey Rocks | 5 Comments
CBC Sports: Maple Leafs sign Lindros for 1 year
There you go you big whiny dork. You can play for the dirty rotten stinkin' Leafs now. This ought to be rich. Remember?: "Whaaaaa I don't want to play for Quebec!" They became Colorado Avalanche and won two cups. I don't see any rings on those fingers of yours Eric. Perhaps you'll give your self another concussion chewing some gum.

Lindros in a quiet room: "Will somebody answer the goddamned phone!" or the more Quasimodo-esque: THE BELLS! THE BELLS!

Asshole. You belong in Toronto.

Can you tell I'm not a fan?

Wicker Man = Hot and Dusty

Aug 10, 2005 by Mike Browne in Filmmaking | 2 Comments
Cough... gag! More Wicker Man. I didn't realize there was so much dust in Maple Ridge. We finished at Bordertown today. I stood there with the tumble weeds for the past two days. So dry... I'm coated in grime. I smell like a ball's nutsack. I'm off to shower to hopefully blow the stink off me before sleeping really quickly to start another day in the hot sun with a pretty orange vest on screaming into the radio and being nearly run over by cast and crew shuttles. Today we worked with Nick Cage and Molly Parker. Kate Beahan showed up for her wardrobe fitting as well as hair and make-up tests. And tomorrow we'll see Frances Conroy aka Ruth Fisher from one of our faourite shows, Six Feet Under (<---- beware fans there be spoilers here arrrrr).

Canucks sign Richard Park

When playing for The Wild he was a thorn in Vancouver's side. Now Korean born Richard Park is a Canuck. This is shaping up to be an interesting hockey year already.

More Wickerman

Off to Maple Ridge for 6 more days of Wicker Man... Still commuting, just the other way now. LOL!

Bert's back

Aug 08, 2005 by Mike Browne in Go Canucks Go | 4 Comments
CBC Sports: Bertuzzi reinstated by the NHL
Woohoo! Finally. No more wondering. I love the first sentence in the article:

"Suspended forward Todd Bertuzzi can resume playing for the Vancouver Canucks, effective immediately."

I just hope he doesn't take his new sensativity too far. Remember the teary press conference with his suit that was way too small? I think he had an onion in that hanky anyway.

All that aside, Bert's back.

Hiroshima: 60 years ago today

CBC News: Hiroshima Anniversary
So it ended a war and presumably hundreds of thousands more from dying, but was it the 'right' thing to do? When is this kind of force necessary? There's enough weapons of this kind left in the world to vaporize us all. Why are they needed now? What is nobody had them? Would that change the world? Are they really a detterent as it's been proven the death penalty is not? Is global nuclear disarmament the answer?

It's my birthday! Boy am I tired...

Aug 05, 2005 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | 11 Comments
Today I'm 36 and am awake since 3:00 AM. Ugh! Thanks asshole neighbours. A pox upon you. It sounds like they're moving furniture around again. I'm tired and stressed out. Our landlord and strata council in the building assure us that these people will be continually fined and evicted if the noise doesn't stop. It hasn't stopped. Perhaps I need to call professional help in the form of a dark witch and have a hex put on these boobs. NOTE: Upon reading these hexes they do seem pretty harsh. I don't think I want someone's soul ripped out and stomped on quite yet but ask me when I've gone another month without sleep.

I think they're up to something criminal (as do the police who we've spoken with). Perhaps drugs? Gee, do you think? They have visitors coming and going at all hours. It may also be theft as they always seem to be moving stuff around, in and out of the suite at all hours, which they rented furnished. Heck they got in trouble on day one as they moved in at 1:30 in the morning.

Here's the noise journal we've been keeping to prove we're not just unreasonable whiners:

Tomorrow's my birthday...

Aug 04, 2005 by Mike Browne in Adoption | 12 Comments

Today I got a package in the mail from my birth-mom, Dianne. Strangely enough I knew who it was from when the postman buzzed to tell me there was a package waiting for me downstairs. Other than the huge gift she gave me in the form of the life I've had we have never been able to exchange gifts until now. I wonder what's in it?

Speaking of Hockey...

Aug 04, 2005 by Mike Browne in Hockey Rocks | 1 Comment
After all this mess with the lock out and whining from players and team owners about only making millions of dollars a year I thought I might just ditch my Canucks jersey and take up watching professional knitting. "Go Grandma!" I even neatly avoided blogging about the hockey strike the whole time it was on but, now that it's about 99% sure there'll be a season this year (I'll say 100% when the first puck drops) I feel like a hockey fan again. It must be a Canadian thing...

The CBA has already seen players bouncing around the league to stay under the salary cap. Of note Scott Niedermayer, a once proud New Jersey Devil, is going to Disneyland to play with the Mighty Ducks (Does my semi look-alike Emilio Estevez still coach the Ducks? Oh wait, taht was a movie. Nevermind.) and Peter Forsberg is leaving those whinging, Bertuzzi suing, mile high a-holes in Colorado in the lurch and heading to Philadelpia for cheese steak sandwiches. We'd have likeed to have seen Forsberg here in Vancouver to play with Markus, but not for two years at least without a major trade.

Speaking of the Canucks (Go Canucks! Go!) and specifically Nazzy, he has been resigned with the Canucks for another three years that will see the destitute hockey player earn a mere $18 million under the new agreement. On a semi-sad note, sometime lazy ass Canucks defenseman Brent Sopel and his horrific hockey hair were traded to NY Islanders for a conditional 2006 draft pick.

The Canucks roster is still in doubt as according to the NHL's website, specifically the page on free agents, Vancouver has a number of people as yet unsigned and still free agents a lot of which are players of some stature in our fair city. Here's the list:

Bryan Allen, Tyler Bouck, Artem Chubarov, Dan Cloutier, Matt Cooke, Jason King, Brendan Morrison, Mattias Ohlund, Jarkko Ruutu, Sami Salo, Daniel Sedin, Henrik Sedin, Nathan Smith, Brent Sopel (gone already).

Holy crap. Looking at it again it reads like the whole team. I think I just pooed my pants. Come on Canuckleheads let's get most of these guys signed before the season so we can a little breathe easier. Notice I said most... Cloutier? I'm not a big fan, but I know Calgary's cocky Finnish netminder Miikka Kiprusoff is up for grabs. The Canucks should snag him and piss off all the folks in Cowtown. That would make the Red Mile turn green.

Yay! Hockey's back!!

Sir Sean Connery Retires

What? oh well... I love the quote in the article about the demise of Sir Sean's acting career from The Movie Blog:

"I'm fed up with the idiots, the ever-widening gap between people who know how to make movies and those who green light them. I don't say they're all idiots - I'm just saying there's a lot of them."

How very Sean Connery.
