Cowan scores in 2 OT

Apr 28, 2007 by Mike Browne in Go Canucks Go | 1 Comment
Ya-freakin' hoo! Cowan the Brabarian scores two goals in two games and this one's the game winner in 2nd OT! After an abysmal performance on Wednesday night the the Canucks come back with lots of heart to win game two against the awesome Anaheim Ducks. The series now comes back to Vancouver and GM Place with the series knotted at one goal each. Sunday ought to be a doozy!

Trevor Linden sure is the man in the playoffs. What a great pass...

Premiere's 100 Greatest Movie Lines

Apr 27, 2007 by Mike Browne in Movies and TV | 3 Comments

"The lines that people love most come not necessarily from the most revered films in the canon (though Casablanca and Citizen Kane are represented), but from down-to-earth comedies or action films (Ahem, "I'll be baaack!") that grabbed the audience on a visceral level. Whatever the genre of the film, these small bits of dialogue are important: they're cultural shorthand, part of the language everyone shares."

[entire list at ohnotheydidn't or the original version at Premiere's site]

Some particular favourites of mine from this list:

86. "Can I borrow your underpants for ten minutes?" — The Geek (Anthony Michael Hall) in Sixteen Candles (1984)

68. "Dogs and cats living together! Mass hysteria!" — Bill Murray as Dr. Venkman in Ghostbusters (1984)

41. "You're gonna need a bigger boat." — Brody (Roy Scheider) in Jaws (1975)

26. "Mein Fuhrer! I can walk!" — Dr. Strangelove (Peter Sellers) in Dr. Strangelove (1964)

Bobby "Boris" Pickett Dies At 69

Apr 27, 2007 by Mike Browne in Downers | 1 Comment

"He was the reluctant hero of Halloween, an icon who became so associated with the holiday, it ended his normal singing career.

Bobby "Boris" Pickett, the man behind one of the most famous one-hit wonders in history, died Thursday. The artist who made "Monster Mash" an annual event starting in 1962 was suffering from leukemia and was only 69 years old."

He doesn't mash any more.

Thanks to Bill G for pointing me to the news.
Here we have Mike Tyson and Bobby Brown doing their own rendition:

That's even more sad.

Black is beautiful

Apr 26, 2007 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | 2 Comments
I've changed the look of the blog once again. This time I've gone with a darker theme for a number of reasons:

  1. Black speaks to me and my content more. A little more heavy metal and horror.

  2. It's more energy efficient. Yes, darker websites use less wattage and are thus greener

  3. Fonzie would like it.

  4. I like black.

Dark is better. :)

Quincy opening with lyrics

I used to watch this show every day in syndication during Junior High School at 5pm. I loved Quincy and Sam.

Here's a tangent:

Have you ever noticed that Sam, Quincy's Japanese sidekick seemed to show up as a Japanese soldier in every WW2 movie from that era? Oh yeah, and who could forget Pat Morita? I guess there weren't a lot of Asian actors in Hollywood then. Now it's Chow Yuen Fat and Ken Watanabe who are everywhere. The more things change the more they stay the same.

Canucks win round one

Apr 23, 2007 by Mike Browne in Go Canucks Go | 2 Comments

Trevor Linden's late goal off a redirected slap shot sealed the Canucks' series win. They'll face the Anaheim Ducks in Round 2. - Photo from AP

I'm not sure why I haven't been blogging the play-offs. Perhaps I was just afraid to get my hopes up. Anyway, the Canucks are through round one with the help of a game winning / series clinching goal by Mr. Game 7, Trevor Linden.

In a series that saw stellar goaltending at both ends of the rink it seemed it was anyone's series, may be even leaning toward Dallas after the Canucks blew a 3 - 1 series lead as Dallas forced a game 7 with the amazing Marty Turco's 3rd shutout win of the series in game 6.

The first period looked shaky, but the Canucks came on stronger and stronger as the game went on taking it to the Stars. Roberto Luongo made an unbelievable save in the 3rd period to keep the Canucks ahead by one goal. In a last ditch effort during the last minute Dallas pulled Marty Turco for the extra attacker, but it was for naught. Taylor Pyatt and Brian Smolinski scored empty net goals allowing the Canucks a 4 - 1 in regulation win.

Congratulations Canucks! Good luck in Anaheim on Wednesday. They're goin' duck huntin'!

Looks like the Believe in Blue shirt that Carol picked up for me the other day works. Must keep it clean throughout the next series so I can wear it for every game.

Go Canucks Go!

Segment from the helicopter documentary "Straight Up!", showing power line maintenance being performed on live wires by a man outside a helicopter, using a type of Faraday cage.
I'm scared of the same things as this guy (surprisingly) is. The third one I've faced, but the other two... not so much. This video freaked me out.

Kurt Vonnegut Dies at 84

Apr 12, 2007 by Mike Browne in Downers | 2 Comments

Fred R. Conrad/The New York Times

Kurt Vonnegut, whose dark comic talent and urgent moral vision in novels like "Slaughterhouse-Five," "Cat's Cradle" and "God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater" caught the temper of his times and the imagination of a generation, died Wednesday night in Manhattan. He was 84 and had homes in Manhattan and in Sagaponack on Long Island.

His death was reported by Morgan Entrekin, a longtime family friend, who said Mr. Vonnegut suffered brain injuries as a result of a fall several weeks ago.

Could it be ... SATAN? When Claudette Soden put up a sign asking motorists to beep for Jesus outside her business in Naugatuck, Conn., fellow business owner Phil Young took exception. He thought it smacked of religious intolerance, so he erected his own sign.

'A Christmas Story' Director Killed in Car Crash

Apr 04, 2007 by Mike Browne in Downers | Add comment
4 Apr 2007
Director Bob Clark, who helmed the modern holiday classic A Christmas Story and was the writer-director-producer of the Porky's films, died in a car crash with his son on the Pacific Coast Highway early Wednesday morning; he was 67.

According to police reports, Clark's car was hit head-on around 2:30am by an SUV that swerved into Clark's southbound lane; Clark and his 22 year-old son, Ariel, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The SUV driver, who was driving without a license, was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and is to be booked for gross vehicular manslaughter.

The director of the 1974 cult horror film Black Christmas as well as the 1980 Jack Lemmon drama Tribute (which nabbed Lemmon a Best Actor Oscar nomination), Clark scored a major box office success in the early '80s with the teen sex comedy Porky's, a surprise hit that he wrote, directed and produced which became the highest-grossing film of 1982 and one of the highest-grossing films ever in Canada.

Clark went on to helm the sequel, Porky's II: The Next Day, a year later, but it was another 1983 film that would become his most memorable. Based on humorist Jean Shepherd's short story collection In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash, A Christmas Story was the nostalgic and humorous tale of a young boy named Ralphie (Peter Billingsley) growing up in the 1940s who yearned for the ultimate Christmas gift, a Red Ryder BB gun. Also starring Darren McGavin and Melinda Dillon, the comedy (which Clark directed, co-wrote and produced) was a modest success in its initial box office run but gained a strong and steady following through the next two decades, becoming a TV staple during the holiday season and a consistent seller on DVD.

Clark's other films included the Dolly Parton-Sylvester Stallone comedy Rhinestone, Turk 182!, From the Hip, and the two Baby Geniuses movies.

Recently, there had been talk of Howard Stern producing a remake of Porky's, and Clark had begun development on a remake of one of his first films, the horror movie Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things.

Carol meets TPB

Apr 02, 2007 by Mike Browne in Hmmmmmm | 2 Comments
My wacky wife met the Trailer Park Boys today and got their new book signed for me. Here's the page of the book with all three signatures:

Interesting choice of pages to sign. Hehe! I'm grateful to have it.

Here's a picture of Carol with the boys:

We're not sure what the reflection is on Ricky's teeth, but there's my wife with Bubbles, Ricky and Julian. Oh dear. They're probably thinking in their Nova Scotian slang, "This woman is some retarded." She tends to get weirdly star struck... "Hi Cher!" Oh well, she did it without completely losing her mind, fainting or barfing so that's a little progress at least.

Thanks Mrs B!

You can see more about Carol's adventure on her blog.

I'll close with one of my favourite Rickyism's from the book:

"Sam's got this thing like a calculator that can send messages all over the world" - Ricky

"Ricky, it's the Internet." - Julian

Missing Moosh

Below is one a photo I took memorializing our beloved dog and attempting to share how much the loss of our sweetie has affected us. We used to see Moosh's face happily waiting for us at the top of the stairs when entering the house after a hard day's work or just being out for groceries:

I've created a photo set on my flickr account called Missing Moosh with a few more with the same theme. Click on each photo for a description of how it relates to Moosh.

The photos are more about what's not there than what is.
