Reporter troubles in Iraq

Reporters have been having some difficulties during the Iraq war. Some have been killed, wounded or are missing. Others are constantly backpedalling on what they have reported as it turns out only to be rumour. Last week a Christian Science Monitor reporter was un-embedded for giving away too much information during a live broadcast. Today the notorious Geraldo Rivera (who claims it’s not true and called MSNBC “pathetic” for spreading a “pack of lies”) was given the boot for exactly the same thing. And finally, NBC has fired Peter Arnett for telling Iraqi TV that the American war plan has failed.

Could it be true? Are these reporters human? Are they truly imperfect and often wrong? You betcha they are. Remember, the news ain’t necessarily an honest objective statement of what’s happening. There’s always that filter of human falliblity between the facts and the story we get. A live as-it-happens war sure does have it’s pitfalls.

Celebrity Sighting at IGA

I went to IGA on Burrard St today to pick up some Texas BBQ chicken wings and a bottle of water for lunch. Pathetic, eh? Anyway, I went to the regular check out to buy my stuff because the deli line up was too long. Who should be standing in line in front of me, but Charlie Sheen and Denise Richards. Mr Sheen was telling the cashier how he had just finished filming a movie here in Vancouver. It was most likely Scary Movie 3, they’re both in that one.

I was going to ask for their autographs before they got into a waiting Yellow Cab and drove off, but someone else beat me too it and I didn’t have the heart to irritate them further. They were grocery shopping for God’s sake not out at a celebrity mixer.

Here’s what was up on the Al Jazeera Site

Hackers replaced the English-language Web site for Arab satellite television network Al-Jazeera with a U.S. flag and the message ‘Let Freedom Ring’ as seen in this image taken fom a computer Thursday, March 27, 2003. Calling themselves the ‘Freedom Cyber Force Militia,’ the hackers briefly hijacked Internet traffic destined for Al-Jazeera’s Web site and to a different Web page on computers operated by Networld Connections Inc., an Internet provider in Salt Lake City.
