Here but not here…

Work has really taken it out of me. I’ve been so into it I’d lost all desire to blog. My posting had been tapering off until last month I’d just had it. Ending on a post about a movie focused on people leaping from the Golden Gate Bridge doesn’t look so good.

I’m okay. No bridges for me… I’m scared of heights anyway. 🙂

I’m taking another look at the direction I’m headed career wise. I still want to be involved in the movie business, but the whole DGC thing is looking less and less attractive as time goes on. I’m not sure I want to be a professional PA for the years it takes to climb the ladder toward either Production Manager or First Assistant director. I am 37 years old after all. The hours suck, the pay isn’t so great and physically I’m bagged. Basically all I see in that direction is dealing with logistics and not a hell of a lot of room for creativity which is why I wanted to be in the business in the first place.

Props and the rest of the art department is looking attractive. I still get to be on set and involved and have a more creative say in what things look like. I have to get my PAL (that’s firearms Possession and Acquisition Licence) so I can buy, rent and handle the weapons for films. I like playing with guns so that could be fun.

On the last movie, Loch Ness (A horror movie about the Loch Ness monster eating teens in Lake Superior), I got to stand in on set for the props department when they were busy and help make sure actors had what they needed for a scene. Kind of fun handing off “pills” and a glass of water on cue.

Anyway, I’m back to blogging. I doubt anyone but Carol and maybe the folks in NS will read this, but I’m here.

The Bridge

Carol brought this movie to my attention a few months ago as one we must see. It was playing to raves at the Tribeka film festival. Just last week I heard the director of the film on Opie and Anthony. LAst night Mark from the Hollywood North Report sent me the trailer seen below…

Frightening to think what must go through these sick people's minds, what they must feel, as they plunge toward the cold water below. The Bridge appears to be one of those films that make us ask ourselves some tough questions. Not the least of which is why do people decide to end their own lives?

Telemarketer gets nailed…

No real video, just audio but well worth listening. If you hate telemarketers as most folks do you should check it out. Tom Mabe rules.

BC Film Industry Halloween Showcase

Halloween’s a coming!

Once again the BC film industry is putting their talents to use raising money for BC Children’s Hospital with the 2nd Annual Haunted Studio Tour from October 27 – 31, 2006. Last year saw $20,000 go to the charity, however this year promised to be bigger and better and the goal is to triple the amount raised. The event sold out completly last year so get your tickets soon.

I’m sad that I missed the deadline to volunteer this year, but I going to next year for sure. Carol and I are going on the Saturday at 4:30pm. Come on out and join us!

Napolean meets Karl

OMG! Two of my favourite all time characters together in one room. uuhhhh huh! With a little polish and a decent writer I think there’s a movie there.

Breathing Earth

Check out Breathing Earth. It shows birth and death rates as well as CO2 emissions for every country in the world as it happens. Fascinating.

A Mother Behind Bars

It’s another MOW for Insight Films. Yes, A Mother Behind Bars (very reminiscent of Snakes on a Plane) is the working title for this one. I started last week for 4 days as an Office P.A. and I was hired, after some wrangling by Greg Rousseax the 1st AD on the show, as 3rd Assistant Director for the show which goes to camera on Thursday for another 14 day shoot.

I love these things. Prep/Shoot/Wrap. Easy peasy lemon squeezy! Not to mention the fact that I’m back with the crew I love to work with. Its like a big family.

The director on this show is David Winlker who is no relation to Henry (the Fonz) Winkler, but is the son of Irwin Winkler, the producer of some of my favourite films namely Rocky, Raging Bull and Goodfellas. David told us yesterday that he used to play on the back lot of MGM and the space ship used in Planet of the Apes! Too cool.

Our director is also not so turned on about the name and is offering $100 to the person who comes up with a title better than “A Mother Behind Bars” by the time we wrap. I told him at lunch yesterday that I thought “Apocalypse Now” is a great title. He just looked at me like I were out of my tree and said not a word.

Anyhoo, off tomorrow morning to prep radios and my AD room. I’ll be the “truck bitch” according to Greg. LOL! I think I might actually do some video blogging of the show from my perspective. I’ll have more time on my hands as a 3rd AD. We’ll see.
