OMG! It’s Raymond Huey!

I can’t believe it! There’s a video of the notorious Bridgewater, NS (I think late) alleged homosexual icon, Raymond Huey (or it might be Raymond Hewey) , on YouTube!

The older gentleman in the video is Raymond. He was teased endlessly by the kids (and some adults) in my hometown for years for events that may or may not have taken place around WWII having to do with himself and some sailors being “blown ashore” when it was still actually a crime to be gay.

I remember the eccentric Raymond being the butt of many a joke over the years. His first name even became the substitute for gay, e.g. “Don’t be such a Raymond!” I’m not proud to say that I took part as well. Respect for my elders? What’s that? We prank called Raymond on many occaisions from sailing school. Poor old codger…

Some of my personal memories of him are his yelling and cussing at the screen during matinee movies on Saturdays and Sundays frequented by children and their folks. My grandmother told me stories of Raymond attending every funeral in town, supposedly for the sandwiches.

One story I remember fondly is of Mom driving Rachel, my sister, and her friend, who were both just 10 or so at the time, to a sports event. The girls were being rowdy and as Mom drove down King Street she warned the girls that if they weren’t good she’d drop them at Raymond Huey’s house. The girls continued and Mom, true to her word, pulled into Raymond’s driveway and drove up to his house asking the girls to get out. They were hysterical. Good one Ma.

Anyway, there’s a post about Raymond Huey on the Internet now and this is it. I’m not even sure he’s alive although there’s an R Huey listed in Bridgewater on Canada411.ca. I can’t imagine why he’d still be listed with all the teasing, myabe he liked the attention. If he’s still alive he’s got to in his 90’s.
