Trade Forum… Bah! Let’s go to VIFF

The trade forum yackety yack looks rather boring today. I’m going to see Toeing the Line, a showcase of canadian short films at VIFF at 12:30.

Especially of interest is InConvenience a 16 minute short directed by John Penhall (I worked with him on Daingerfield, Fire Mountain and The spiritual Guilt Trip). I’ve seen a rough cut of the short and really liked it.

Here’s the premise:

When a Chinese storeowner finds a misplaced winning lottery ticket, he literally takes cover from his guilt and perceived fear of retribution.

Here’s a still of Henry, the lead:

Blog reader, drama Dave, also makes a humourous appearance in this as well.

Vancouver shot short film InConvenience premieres at VIFF

VANCOUVER, BC – InConvenience, the new short film by John Penhall, premieres at the 23rd Vancouver International Film Festival with two screenings. Written by Lynne R. Kamm, InConvenience, tells the story of Henry, the owner of a run-down convenience store. An elderly widower, Henry goes about his remaining days trying to keep a low profile and just get by. Then, one day, with the Lotto jackpot up to a staggering sum, he discovers that the winning ticket has been left behind by one of his customers. Star, Chang Tseng (Long Life, Happiness and Prosperity), gives a tour-de-force comic turn as the down-on-his-luck Henry who finally gets a chance to dream – but is completely unprepared for where these dreams might take him.

Lensed by Shannon Kohli and edited by Franco Pante, InConvenience marks Penhall’s second film in the Vancouver International Film Festival. Graeme Wearmouth returns to score the film after collaborating on Penhall’s first VIFF short film, The Bed. In 2002 The Bed played at the Vancouver International Film Festival to sold out audiences at the Granville Theatre venue and went on to screen at over 20 festivals around the world before being broadcast on ZeDTV and nominated for 6 Leo Awards.

InConvenience screens on September 30 at 12:30pm at Pacific Cinémathèque and Sunday, October 2 at 7:00 the new Vancity Theatre.
