Watching House season one on DVD

People have been telling me I need to watch House so rather than start a few seasons in Carol bought me the season one DVD’s for my birthday. We started watching and on the second episode the DVD began to skip and freeze up. Upon inspection we disovered that the DVD was flawed internally (not scratched) and needed to be returned. After a few days of waiting to find out what happened to the lacrosse player with the shunt in his head we had our new DVD’s.

We spent the weekend watching more episodes. Before I get into what’s bad about the show I must say I like it very much. Hugh Laurie’s portrayal of the main character, Gregory House M.D., is nothing short of comedic genius. He’s pretty much the main reason I’ll keep watching the show.

It feels like the writers are blowing their creative wads on House’s witty an sarcastic dialog leaving the other characters with hacky network television blather to get us from one smartassed House comment to the next. For example the one dimensional cranky high school exam room monitor not allowing a sick student to go to the bathroom was enough to make me want to go throw up myself. Even Hugh Laurie isn’t always spared. There are those lines you have to deliver as an actor sometimes that make you think, there is no way on Earth any human being with a soul would utter such rubbish but you say them because a) you don’t feel the fight is worth it that day and b) and probably most importantly they are paying you a decent amount of money to say them.

After seeing the first 10 episodes  I can say that all in all House is a decent show with good production value, pretty young doctors to look at and argue with House and fairly decent stories. I’m looking forward to seeing this show grow as I’m told it has through the next four seasons. We’ve got a lot of catching up to do and I home to be caught up to the broadcast schedule by the time the fifth season of House premieres on Fox on September, 19 2008.
